what else do I need to buy to use this with my iPod? i want to be able to charge my iPod in the car, so what type of cable do I need to get?

-Nick

As you might guess, there are lots of ways to do this.

Simple solution: If you go with a 1/8" male to 1/8" male for audio, then you can use any type of auto-charger you want. Of course there's some thought that the audio out of the headphone jack doesn't sound as good as the line out of the dock connector. (Some people can hear the difference, some people can't.)

Also there's the all-in-ones:

OR

They charge the iPod and also have a 1/8" female audio out jack. Use a 1/8" male to 1/8" male from there to the Jazzy.

Any solution that includes charging the iPod runs the risk of ground loop noise. If you are concerned, you can either try it first and go back and redo it if there is, or play it safe and start with one of the PAC SNI-1/3.5 Noise Filters from Crutchfield

Lots of screws, but overall much easier to remove and reinstall the Legacy stereo than most others I've worked on over the years.

Jazzy's detailed instructions make all the difference. Thanks Jazzy!

Did mine today right after Howard Stern was over. Easier than I thought. The only problem I has was hooking up the GLI and getting all the adaptors together. I bought the crappy one from Radio Shack and had to piece together all sorts of wires then I split it and have a separate 1/8" for an ipod or whatever in the cubby. I put my Sirius antenna in the spoiler. NO WIRES.

Thanks again maing!

I spent two nights pulling everything apart. I was missing a connector I needed to get the GLI. Additionally, I am having issues with the Roady2 or Roady XT placement (gave up and am putting it in the cupholder (with the Ipod for now). I also had to create some crazy connections with RS wiring and adapters.

BIG HINT - lots of different screws; some similar but different. I replaced the screws that hold the CD in, behind the face plate. 6 or 7 times...ggrrrrr it would work in the car partially installed. Fully installed, the CD would not engage. At 1F'N.a.m. my friend notices that the screws we were using to hold the CD in looked odd. We were using the wrong ones!!!! There are a very flat face screw and some ones that look similar. All else is very straight forward. LOL! The madness...

Thanks Jazzy for the great product!

I think I ended up taking out more screws than I needed to also; took me a minute to find the proper ones. Luckily I didn't lose any or put any in the wrong places (that I know of). At first I didn't think I would need the GLI, but the whine has gotten worse, so I got that nice crutchfield one with the 3.5 jacks already on it. Hopefully I will be able to put it an the end of the cable as opposed to having to take out the stereo again and put right after the Jazzy mod.

Also, I thought I would have the courage to hardwire the power with no problems, but I would like to get some direction to what people have done for hardwiring the power. If anyone has hardwired their power to a Sirius or XM unit, I would like to get as much detail about it as possible before tackling that.

I'm glad the installs are continuing without any significant problems. It sounds like my instructions could use a couple minor updates, but to be honest guys, I can hardly find the time. I mentioned in another thread, but I might as well restate it here, just before the holidays I got engaged and the next few weeks sort of went by in a whirlwind. I'm spending most of my evenings either running normal daily errands, doing "wedding" shopping or building boards trying to stay ahead of orders.

To answer your question praedet, I've been ready to order a bench radio for awhile, but I'm trying to work out a deal with one of two electrical engineers to make sure it will happen first. I'd love to do it myself, and learn a buttload in the process, but to be honest, I don't really have the time or expertise to get it done any time soon, if at all. I am willing to invest considerable dough in getting it done though, so it's not dead ended, just "in process" or delayed while I try and work out the details of paying someone else to do it right.

j0ebert, I hardwired my Roady2 to the cigarette lighter. Using the cig lighter allowed me to not worry about the wires being hot while I'm working on it since they're off when the car is off, so I didn't have to disconnect the battery. Also, this way XM just turns on & off with the car, exactly what I want it to do. I'd highly recommend double checking everything with a multimeter first, just to make sure things that you expect are off really are off and if things don't seem right after it's installed (stuff won't turn on, error lights, etc), it might be time to check the fuses. Obviously, the safest way to do hardwire power installs is to just disconnect the battery, but I'm lazy. :D

Yup, they're available. Paypal order link is on the first page. They will continue to be available too until Subaru fixes the shortcomings of the factory stereo...or at least allows us to replace it with an aftermarket deck again.

Heh, actually she already does help me make CD's (or rather makes them for me while I'm stuck upstairs soldering). I'm not sure if I could trust her to solder after how "well" she did with me trying to teach her how to weld. Suffice to say, I won't be standing or sitting on any of her metal artwork. :D

YGPP. Tks Jazzy and congrats on getting engaged. While doing the wedding shopping/planning, just say "whatever makes you happy dear". Just don't say it to often or she'll know.

Oh and just wait until you have kids.

actually Jazzy, I have an idea (not to be annoying). It would be kind of cool if your board had two mini jacks. One would be for the aux in but the other would be for a little toggle switch that could be mounted (maybe in teh cubby) and allow the user to switch between the CD changer and the aux in. That way the silent CD wouldn't be necessary.

Is something like that possible?

Finally, this thread should have a sticky.

I could be wrong on this, but isn't the easiest way to avoid ground loop to ground all the devices in question to the same location? So for the dock/charger ground it to the same line thats grounding the head unit. In that way you'd avoid the ground loop differential all together.

Jazzy,

I would really like to request a color install PDF instead of the black and white photos. It's really hard to tell from the photos what is what and I think everyone would benefit.

I am also confused a little bit on the need for a ground loop isolator. In all cases is it best to have one of these? If not, what circumstances?

Thanks in advance.

You will never know until you do the install. You had might as well just buy one, as it is a cheap insurance policy against noise. I didn't use one and had to rip apart my interior again once I found out that I needed it. :(

I forgot the original PDF is in black and white...I did that so I could tell what the contrast was going to come out like when printed, but I can republish it in color. I agree, it is easier to see in color.

As far as the ground loop, I think pretty much everyone is better off installing one. Besides the cost, there is no disadvantage to using one.

I've been considering buying some to sell with the boards, along with some of the more common audio cables...it would be espensive though & I'd have to charge extra to cover shipping & stocking more "merchandise." I figured people are better off buying one themselves at Radio Shack. If there's demand, I'd do it though. I'd probably charge $25 for the mini-jack GLI and $10 for gold plated cables... thoughts? 2-day shipping would still be included as it would just ship with the board.

I can host the PDF if you need Jazzy.
Thanks Tide. I have a host though, my buddy is a sys admin at an ISP, the link for it is on the first post. I just need to republish the PDF in color. One of these days maybe I can get a website together and stop living off of your forum :) Hopefully it's brought a few new subaru owner's here though. I appreciate you letting me lay out the info & organize purchases here.

FWIW, if you do a google search for "Aux in subaru" this thread comes up #1. THanks everyone else too for helping to make this a successful project.
