absolutsnwbrdr
There was a thread on here from 2007 that went into great great great detail about installing HID's into the foglights: http://legacygt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1021172&postcount=73 Its a great writeup that goes into incredible detail, but its a little too busy for me (and no pictures). I think it can be explained in a more simple fashion. So here's mine... If you're trying HID's in the fogs, chances are you've already mastered the HID's in the headlights. Headlights were simple.... the only thing that was altered was that gray "dust cap." Well the fogs are similar, but they have a black "dust cap" that needs a little more modification. The headlights can easily be put back to stock halogen, whereas the fogs WILL NOT be able to return to stock. What you will be modifying: 1. the black plastic fog light dust cap with plug 2. the short OEM fog light harness with white plug and gray plug Those two things are all you would need to return to stock, so even if you did want to go back it would be as easy as getting new dust caps and short harnesses. Lets begin.. I removed the front bumper to get to everything easier. This makes accessing the foglights and mounting ballasts much much easier. Take that short wire harness that was connected to the black cap and hack the gray plug off. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs118.snc1/4981_524967085312_72100768_31074995_7536372_n.jpg http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=135654&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1354582971 Take the black plastic dust caps and cut the plug part off of it, leaving you with a nice opening. I used a drill, pliers, and the sidewalk (as sandpaper) to do this. I'm sure you have the proper tools, i.e. a dremel. Get the opening to be about the size of the back of the cap... see pics below. http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v4981/231/4/72100768/n72100768_31074996_3731812.jpghttp://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=135655&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1354582971 Take the HID power wires out of the rubber grommet and cut the connectors off of it (as shown in the bottom right of the pic above) Solder the hacked HID power wires to the short OEM harness that has the white plug (red to red, black to black) Pull the HID wires and grommet through the hole in the black dust cap. Seal the grommet using silicone sealant or whatever. Also put some sealant in the holes in the grommet where the red and black power wires once were. All this should yield you the following: http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=135656&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1354582971 Pretty self explanatory from here... H3 HID bulbs go in factory fog light housing, put on black dust cap, connect HID to ballast to factory plug, mount ballasts, put bumper back on, enjoy! note: plugs are all different, so they will only plug into exactly where they are supposed to go!! easy!! oh and if you mess something up, its not my fault... mine work perfectly This seems a lot more complicated than it actually is. Once you get the H3 HID kit and open the box, everything will make more sense. Catalyst
For functionality sake, would this actually be too bright for fogs? "This is an adventure."
Darkness of Death
if you have HID's for low beams you dont really notice any difference on non HID fog lights. i'm sure this would help out on vision...though i am not for certain either as i dont have HID fogs on
trackhore
For functionality sake, would this actually be too bright for fogs? Yes. It completely defeats the purpose of a foglight and is a cosmetic upgrade done to satisfy the owner's personal tastes.
absolutsnwbrdr
the light output from the fogs alone is tremendous, but a lot of the light is wasted because fogs arent made to project 100' in front of you (they arent driving lights). if either of the 5000k fog hids go bad, i will be keeping them hid, but probably going with 3000k. i'm happy with it for now though! looks awesome at night! absolutsnwbrdr
after i finished them last night, i went for a short drive but only had my cell phone on me so i couldnt get good pictures. maybe i'll take my nice digital out tonight and get some good pics that show the output from fogs only, lows only, and fogs + lows. trackhore
as halogens they dont put out a whole lot of light on the road to begin with As fog lights, they aren't really designed to. Their intended purpose is project yellow colored light to the low and immediate road in front of the car in an effort to reduce the amount of light reflected back by the moisture in the air; which is what happens to driving, low, and high beams. f1anatic
Actually I have my fog lights adjusted "upwards" and even with my HIDs (55 Watt, 4200 K - which are the whitest) I can tell the fog lights. It gives me more peripheral vision and project maybe about 5-7 meters in front of the car. It is not just a subtle difference. I have the non-HID Narva 55 watt (H3 I believe) bulbs. Mine were angled way too low from the factory, and basically worthless. Now they work just as well as the fogs on my previous car (91 BMW 325ix). absolutsnwbrdr
sorry about the delay... here are the pics... dont really do the lights justice. I think I'm going to have to find a better spot that demonstrates how far the light actually goes.... praedet
Sorry my write-up was to detailed and tedious I have noticed better performance in inclement weather w/ my 2300K HID fogs, than I had before w/ PIAA Ion Crystals... But, that is using them as fogs, not driving lights
absolutsnwbrdr
haha like i said, it was a great write-up, but when i first looked at it i was a little overwhelmed if i hadn't had the HID's sitting in front of me, I probably wouldn't have gone forward with the mod, but now i know how easy it was
