FundamentalyConfused
I'm still a Subaru noob but I'd suggest checking the DCCD solenoid and looking for bad wires.

Legacy Wagon
Check the passenger side strut tower. There should be a small box on there labeled FWD with a fuse in it if it's in FWD mode. It should tell you on your gauge cluster if you're in FWD though. Also these cars have a 90/10 front to rear split until it realizes there's a bit of slip, then it transfers. Your front wheels will spin before your back wheels kick in. A DCCD is a driver controlled center differential and I'm not sure any of the US ones had it, but if they do I want it lol
FundamentalyConfused
Sorry Pirate I'm just a noob still but if there's no fuse in the holder then you should definatly be in AWD. What kind of transmission is in it?
FundamentalyConfused
Check out this link for wiring diagrams and service manuals. From my observations the Liberty is very similar to the Legacy. http://www.main.experiencetherave.com/subaru_manual_scans/
Legacy Wagon
That's what I've always heard so I figure the stuff is probably in the same spot.
