19MM Rear Sway Bar Install - Pics

Recommended Posts

My 2011 3.6R has a new rear sway bar. The install is very easy and it does give the rear of the car a different, more grounded feel. Definitely worth the money. There's a few simple steps:

1. Get the 19mm rear sway bar ($72.57 + $14.67 shipping). It comes with the rubber bushings.

2. Drive the car up a couple of ramps.

3. Remove two 12mm bolts from each side.

4. Remove one 14mm nut from each side.

5. Now that you have it detached just pull the old sway bar out and put in the new one the same way.

I figured it would be that easy. I remember from working on my Audi that you are better off using ramps, if the wheels droop from jacking up the car, it makes it harder to disconnect the end links.

Really funny coincidence...

I ordered the same bar on Sunday, it arrives Thursday.

I have to work on Saturday, but maybe I'll work on it that evening. Sunday at the latest.

Edit...

Where's the pics? :-)

Sorry about the pics guys, they were there before I swear. I'll fix it when i get home from work. The bar is made by Subaru, I'd post the link but am unsure of the rules regarding that.

For those of you that have installed the 19MM sway bar, how much of a difference does it really make? Can you actually feel the difference or are you just assuming the car feels better because of the upgrade?

When I had an 08 Impreza, installing a RSB was night and day.

So in my new Legacy, it should improve but won't be as drastic as the Impreza.

It's the Subaru OEM part for the Outback (more glass and weight on the rear of the Outback so they stuck a larger bar underneath).

Just look on SubaruOnlineParts site or follow this link:

The folks over at the subaruoutback forum have been putting this bar in their Outbacks as well. I don't believe it was actually made for the Outback, I've read that it's the 2010 STI 19mm rear sway bar.

I immediately noticed a difference it's certainly not one of those things where you go "well I think it's better". The back of the car feels much more stable.

I've been trying to find a cross reference that item for a bit yesterday but I can't find part numbers for any scoobie. Does anyone have a good site that we can see part # and perhaps exploded diagrams:wub:. I'd like to really know if this thing was actually from an STI and which year. The bushings have18 printed on them so I'm suspicious that the bar is 18 not 19mm though I haven't measured the diameter. I've never got bushings one size smaller for any sway bar I've installed and all of them fit tightly.

The bar is listed as part# 20451FG020. The bushings are listed as part# 20464FG020.

19mm sway bar installed and I like it!

I can definitely tell the difference when 'pushing' it in corners/curves.

Besides the 12mm and 14mm wrenches, you will need an allen/hex wrench for the end link nuts. I used a peaked nose vice grips to grip the collar on the opposite side of the sway-bar and then after I had it back together I noticed that there is a hex 'socket' in the end of the 'bolt' that the end link nut is on for you to insert an allen wrench to keep it from turning.

I took pics of the 19mm bar and the 'old' 16mm bar with a cheapo calipers showing the exact sizes. The bushings have a '15' on them for the 16mm bar and '18' for the 19mm bar. I'm guessing they are 1mm smaller to ensure no 'slop'.

Hex in end link:

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally got around to installing this. Either I've gotten used to putting these things in or this was an easier car to work on.

The bar went past the rear diff and past the exhaust with ease. Prob took me 45 minutes tops but I did have to put the car up on jack stands to get at the fasteners. No way I could squeeze myself under there with it to work:lol:

I'd say the car should've shipped this way but it would take the fun out of modifying.

I used ramps (backed onto them).

I think having the suspension at the 'normal' compression would make it easier to work on the end links.

I can feel the difference. Specifically, more stable on the highway. Before, my car seemed to float as if being hit by wind when it wasn't windy. Not any more. Also feels more stable in tight turns.
