RedAce
Okay, I am at my wits end here!! I have a '97 LGT with a completely stock DOHC EJ25. The car has a cylinder one misfire. I have replaced the plugs and wires, MAF sensor, O2 sensor(bank one sensor one), and knock sensor. It has been to a dealer twice and it STILL has the problemhttp://www.misubie.com/forum/images/smilies/new/mad.gif. When I sit at a stop light I can feel the car misfiring. It seems to be temperature related because the warmer it gets outside is when the car starts to act up.The car also seems like sometimes it runs hotter than usual. Also, during the winter when it was cold out the car stopped misfiring and throwing check engine codes... Has anyone ever had a problem like this? Or does anyone know what it could be? Thanks Andrew. blackfang
Have they checked the injector of the possibility a valve could be causing the issue? RedAce
Can't be a valve because after I clear the code the car runs nice and smooth...
KnifeyMcShanker
Take out the plug and check its gap. I don't know off the top of my head but the Haynes manual for your car should say, and sometimes there's a sticker on the inside of the hood that says it too. Other than that, looks like the next most likely thing that you haven't checked yet would be the injector. I can't comment on its usefulness because I've never really used it, but it couldn't hurt to run some injector cleaner for a tank or something. I think you can rule out anything from the coil pack back in terms of ignition, because it's waste spark and if it's bad it would be misfiring on 2 opposing cylinders. blackfang
Can't be a valve because after I clear the code the car runs nice and smooth... Doesn't mean anything. Valves can stick intermittently enough to set the code. I am not saying it is or isn't, but never assume because the code was cleared it can't be such and such part. tzchris
same problem, cyl 1 and 2 (oposing cyls) car is bouncing around at stop lights. cleared the code runs great until code comes back and CEL lights up???? the only thing I did was change plugs last weekend, ran perfect for 500 miles , now this? I have 2 1998 subaru legacy outbacks, one runs mint and is for sale, I have been swapping coil pack, plug wire and still same problem??? any help would be great
blackfang
When you say swapping, you talking about swapping in new parts and it still occurs, or swapping the bad parts around to different cylinders and it still occurs on 1 and 2 or does it follow the pack and wires to 3 and 4? tzchris
Ok, just fixed it! Plug wires were the problem. I replaced 1 plug wire (cyl 1) and drove it to work next day. CEL still on but when I checked the code it was only a P0302 cyl 2 misfire, so I have put all new wires on it it runs like new! (only did 1 wire at a time because I was swapping parts from my other Subie)

RedAce
My problem with the car was a bad cat... Replaced the exhaust and haven't seen a misfire or CEL code since.
blackfang
Damn how many had the same problem in this thread? Hopefully mine is not next. eekay
Scoobers are known for going through cats like toilet paper. Especially aftermarket cats. Apparently, the OEM cats last the longest. Not sure what's so special about them though. There are exhaust shops that won't even replace Scoober cats 'cause they can't guarantee the life of the cat. My 9.3 cups EJ22 makes me feel like my **** is 2.8 decimeters!
blackfang
In most cases it is because the computer has certain parameters it reads for and controls and the aftermarket cats sometimes to not fit the bill and can still throw the code and or fail. streetlethal1000
Well Ill chime in with all you older legacy's...I too am getting a CEL. Its reading misfire #3 and #4. But the one kwirk thats throwing me off is that the car is not studdering or shaking or showing any physical signs that its IS ACTUALLY misfiring. The only other strange symptom is a slight idle variation between 500rpms and 1000rpms. It only comes on when I am on the highway. I can give it more gas, Give it less gas, put it in nuetral. No matter what it blinks a few times, and then stops. After a few drives (turn on, drive and turn off) The CEL sometimes goes away by its own. Other times I reset it with my laptop. Do you think it could actually be a misfire, or just a bad sensor? O2 sensor, knock sensor, cam sensor? someone else said maybe a cat?
