"Clicking" on slow braking.

Recommended Posts

Hi all, thanks for input in advance.

I have a 05 LGT Wagon. Only at slow speeds under 10 mph (nothing apparent on highway speeds) when I brake going straight (hear it more when turning too), I hear a knock/click sound coming from what sounds like the driver side suspension or linkage. Hear it more on left turns too. I got under the car and checked for loose links and braking parts but no avail. I sometimes feel the click in the brake pedal too. Any pointers where I should search? I'm just worried its my CV joint or something more expensive.

Again, Thanks for the input and sorry if theres already another thread explaining this. I couldnt find one when I looked.

Tough to diagnose over the net. I would say, Axle, bearing or pad/slider. Where are you located?

if you are comfortable with hand tools, you can do it yourself. i believe an aftermarket axle can be had for $150, or oem for around $300ish.

What he said.

We charge $260 installed for aftermarket axles.

Thanks for all the input. I will definitely have to check this out. I was hoping it was something like a loose rod end or something. It just sounds like something really out of the ordinary. I can tell is a bearing is going or if its something in the steering. But I was hoping it was something besides the axle. Ugh.

As if only to spite me for posting that the problem went away, the same annoying click has come back. I'll take a closer look around when I put my car on jackstands but I know it's not LCA bushings, I had those replaced. I'm guessing it would be something in the brake assembly.

Its really hard to pinpoint exactly the moment i hear the clicking noise as it happens in different situations. But to the best of my knowledge of the situation it occurs during is.

~Weight being transferred to the front of the car during mild to low braking at slower speeds

~Turning the wheel produced the repeated clicking until I straighten the wheel again.

~I had recently checked the brakes but never noticed any anti-rattle clip broken on the pads. I can check again easily.

~The suspension is still solid and not beat

~New balanced tires

I'm thinking the safest best is to take it to a professional before I start really hammering away at things to see if they're loose. I'm afraid to ignore anything with this car as I definitive don't need to spend tons of money right now for a major catastrophe.

Thanks again all for your input!

if that pic was taken with the car in the air, than put the car down and take it again. it should move back in to position. and yes, bad endlinks make cluck noises, not clicking noises.

my money is on some pitting/corrosion on the stainless shim, that the brake pad slides in the carrier on, that is not allowing the pad to slide properly resulting in clicking. Why do i think that? Cause that's what i was dealing with for a little bit. Started with a chirp chirp chirp that was driving me nuts. So i took that corner apart and cleaned everything. The chirp went away but a clicking developed at low speed when braking. I ordered up a new hardware kit from Rockauto and all is good.

Had the same problem 2 years ago. The stainless shims had essentially turned into cardboard, so I took them out and the noise went away
