I can't believe I bought a Subaru...

Recommended Posts

The last few months I've been researching the perfect car for me, forcing me to spend many hours test driving different cars over and over again... I was looking for something fun, sporty, reliable, safe, but most of all "mature". Up until last weekend I was pretty well set on a 2002 M3, but being 23 was going to get pounded by insurance pretty hard. The runner up at the time was the G35 Coupe, but after driving the M3 the G35 just couldn't really excite me anymore. Beyond that I knew I was going to miss having 4-doors for passengers. I mean sure, my friends and I would figure out a way to get around if I went with a coupe, but I just kind of felt like I'd be taking something away from them.

This weekend I stopped at a Subaru dealership to test drive an STI. I mainly just wanted to do it for fun, but I also wanted to do it for comparison. As expected it was tons of fun, but was pretty much the exact opposte direction I was wanting to go as far as maturity was concerned. I'd love to have an STI as a track/weekend car, but it just didn't seem practical for driving back and forth from work as my only car...

Then I drove this:

...the dealer let me borrow it for the weekend (which is when I took the pictures), and I signed the papers yesterday.

It's a 2007 Subaru Legacy Spec B. I know the 2008's are about to roll out, but I got a great deal on this one, and I really don't like the rear bumper change on the '08 models.

The only "options" are the Spoiler and XM.

My favorite thing about the car is that nobody really knows what it is... It's very "stealth" on the outside, with the hood scoop being the only real tell that it'll show you a good time.

One last note- The "Subaro of Plano" stickers have already been removed.

So what do you think?

Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the forums.

How did you find a dealer that will let a 23 year old essentially borrow their top of the line model car for 2 days? I'd have a different car every weekend if dealers did that around here...

Well I talked with the manager of the dealership a few times before and developed a rapport with him... He gave me one of his salesmen to show me the car, and he just let me take it home for the weekend. I meet the finance manager beforehand as well as the supervisor, and parts manager. I didn't necessarily dress execeptionally, but I dressed nice at least. I knew almost all the features and specs of the care beforehand, and let them know that I had done my research and was a serious perspective buyer.

From my standpoint though, them letting me borrow the car for the weekend (and even giving me a full tank of gas to burn), showed that they were confident in their product.

nice pics! you have some talent.

Thanks, I bought a new dSLR two weekends ago after not having one since I was in highschool... There's a big car meet coming up next week, so I really need to shoot as much as possible to get back into the swing of things.

EDIT: I should also note that my roomate took the first picture in the series.

Looking good. The '07 Spec B is my favorite of the current Legacy series.

.,

+1. I think the 07' is the prime year for Spec B's. You get the 6 speed tranny and you don't get the spaceship style of the 08'.

Good pick up dude.

My story was more of I can't believe I bought a rice burner. I wanted a sporty sedan that was nice inside. Looked at all the domestic options and german options. Didn't want a car from Japan but I saw a LGT on the road and my friend was like they look real nice did a tiny bit of research and added them to my list of test drives. It was more of a I might as well be open minded but I expected to be like that car sucked. After the test drive none of the other cars on my list got even close. I got hooked and have been ever since.

One of the biggest problems facing the car industry today is prejudice. With a lot of hard work and campaigning I think we can overcome this hurdle and make it car history. Come on people, open your minds to the limitless possibilities!!

BTW, I still refuse to drive anything made in Korea and anything sold under the Chevy, Pontiac, Ford, Buick, Mercury, Lincoln, and Buick brands. :)

All kidding aside though, it is a problem. I knew somebody in college that thought Suzuki and Subaru were the same thing. He rode in my WRX and couldn't believe how awesome it was. "I never knew Suzukis had turbos!" People who won't consider a car just because it isn't not US made or "German Engineered" piss me off.

I guess a lot of the problem is that Subaru doesn't advertise worth a shit. I have never seen a commercial for a Legacy, let alone a spec B.

I am the same. And doesn't Ford and GM own all those brands :p. I haven't ever riden/driven in a Ford/GM brand car/truck that really was worth a penny. Mostly cheep plastic.

Just thought of something, what if us the subaru communities got together and with all of our tallents and some $$ from the others, we could probally put together a comercial for the US that would knock the socks of SOA's idiotic marketing department. I know I would shell out some hard earned cash to a project like this.

Edit: oh, and I completely agree that people that think US makers or German engineering is the shiz should be shot. The US car makers have the largets amount of recalls out there. The Germans can't put a car together with out making it the bugiest thing on the road. And those Made in the US buffs, THE LEGACY IS MADE IN INDINA!.

I think that would be pretty cool. It could possibly draw in some of the more close minded market. Theres also a reason why Toyota surpassed GM. It sure wasn't on good looks alone.
