4 year ownership coming up for the 05 GTs...anyone smog at stage2 yet?

I am thinking about going stage2 soon, but haven't decided on whether or not i want to go with a catted DP or catless DP yet. I am keeping my stock cans.

Also suggesstions on a DP would be greatly appreciated as well. i already bought a STI up.

My only deciding factor is whether or not it will pass the sniffer when i have to get a smog check.

looking for opinions from fellow californians.

Do they do a visual for cats?

probably. sti upipe is an OE part tho they wouldnt notice that. and if ur car is lowered enough the mmay skip looking under it =p

I have "heard" that aftermarket uppipes (even cobb or whatever) get missed during inspection. I'd like to hear any personal experiences on that.

I'll have to swap out my cobb DP before inspection though.

Oh, most aftermarket catted DP's still drop one of the two cat's, FYI.

Yep....still curious if anyone has passed with catless. Someone posted on the socal forums passing at stage2 with a catted DP.

wondering what I can expect with catless, since there is a significant cost savings as well.

FYI, its after 5 model years.

LGTs won't need SMOG until 2011, even if purchased in 2004.

2002s just started getting tested in 2008

I did get a SMOG check to register my LGT in CA, and they definitly looked at my downpipe (though it was stock). I'd imagine an STI uppipe would be ok. AVO now makes a CARB legal downpipe, so that would be a recommendation for those wanting to go stage 2 now.

However, I've heard of stage 2 catted passing without an issue, you just need a "friendly" or lazy station. Uncatted? They'll most likely catch that.

Note that some stations allow you to "pre-test" and see what your sniffer results are without telling CARB. ;)

Oh and for catless. Cops know what that smells like now.

the # of cats doesnt matter, in CA if any of the OE emissions control equipment is modified its illegal.

Unless its a CARB legal mod. And now that there's a CARB legal downpipe 9which only has one cat), stg2 without SMOG worries are here :)

And a CARB legal product isn't considered to "alter or modify the original design or performance of the motor vehicle pollution control device or system."

"To ensure that these systems operate as designed, California Vehicle Code Section 27156 and the Federal Clean Air Act prohibit modifications that increase motor vehicle emissions. Since if properly designed, most performance modifications do not increase vehicle emissions, these same laws also allow the installation of parts or modifications proven by their manufacturers and the ARB not to increase vehicle emissions."

I've contacted AVO to get the EO number for the part.

Referee/Judge You are correct, this is not the same as a fully legal DP. You are taking your chances in CA. Right now, approval on the cat only is all we have.

only the cat is carb legal. that doesnt make the DP legal since it is still modifying the factory design and isnt intended to eb an OE replacement

+1. You roll the dice when you make a swap. You may pass and you may not depending on where you go and who you have to deal with. No guarantees...

i bought my 05 new in 06 so im good til 2011

Nope, its based on model year.

My car, purchased new in nov 2004 and your car purchased new in 2006 will both have the same smog year - 2011. (Which is also why I am happy to have a decelmber renewal tag instead of the jan I almost got, SMOG check Dec 2011 insitead of jan 2011 -- hopefully by that time I'll have a tiny plot of land in Amador county big enough for a mailbox :) )

Here's my warning, DMV and CHP are quite anal about out of state cars (though more OR than NV) and enforce quite a bit because they don't get the tax. (On the other hand amador county gives them the $$$ without SMOG).

Also note that clark county now has SMOG and that might move north.

sniffer for us is nothing. load the cobb econo map in the parking lot and u should be fine. theres no dyno test for awd cars

I would recommend reloading the stock map at least two weeks prior to your smog check. I accidentally drained my battery on my 98 Nissan truck, so the ECU reset. When I went in for a smog check a week later, the ECU still wasn't showing as "ready" for the smog test, so I failed even though my tailpipe emissions were all below the allowed concentrations. Obviously, this is only an issue for OBD-II cars (96 or newer).
