rubbing/grinding noise when turning AND accelerating (with video)

Recommended Posts

This issue arose when winter time hit. It is usually on when I turn left although I have got it to do it turning right a couple times.

So when I turn left AND accelerate i get this rubbing/grinding noise until I straighten out the wheel or let go of the gas. I've been searching for the same issue but to no avail. I do have lowering springs on stock struts (which im thinking could be the/part of the issue) I bought the car with them on it (I think there s techs..there green) but not sure. Anyways any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Heres a video of the sound.

Have you checked to see if the wheel is rubbing the inside of the wheel well? Doesn't quite sound like a CV joint, but don't rule that out either.

Are you getting any feedback through the steering wheel when it happens?

Sounds a lot like the tire rub issue im having right now with a offset wider stance on my snow tires/rims. Could be the rears if you cant see any spots where the fronts would rub while turning. The inside top of the wheel well has a thick steel-lined rubber insert that the rear tires are probably hitting. Mine only rubs under full acceleration and hard turning (but im at stock ride height).

I've checked the front tires for signs of rubbing but there is absolutley none. I get no feedback through the steering wheel what so ever (kinda odd, you think you would). im not ruling out an axle yet either it just doesnt sound like one I've ever heard. It does sound like a tire rubbing but im almost completely positive that Its coming from the front but I will check the rear to see, maybe the sounds just traveling towards the front haha. Im waiting to get my buddy that's pretty much a drive train specialist to take a look at it for me but hes just been super busy. But in the meantime anymore feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

After listening to it several more times, could it be the rack & pinnion? When you turned hard left it makes the sound, and when you corrected it by turning right it made the sound again. Sounds like it's doing it when the steering wheel is turned to amost the lock position on each side.

I know this is a bit of an old thread but you want to check the o-ring on the return power steering line on your pump.

Here's a related video, it's not the whole story though.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ifANBSb8DA]Subaru Power Steering Noise Fix - YouTube[/ame]

What you can do is wait for the car to get cold, turn back and fourth to get the car to make the noise. Pop open the power steering fluid resivoir and look for bubbles. If there's bubbles, then 100% without a doubt the o-ring in the return fitting on the pump is leaking and needs to be replaced and I'd say there's a 98% chance that the rubbing/grinding noise you're hearing is from that problem.

There's a lot of old dead threads where people explain this symptom where no one has followed up. I'm out to fix that.
