nightspeed98
I ordered an SPT intake and plan to buy a cobb AP but i read somewhere i can't or shouldn't use both. any feedback as to why? any experiences? anyone even try it?
schwinn
SPT intakes are known to affect the MAF readings on the car, which can lead to lean conditions and detonation. Secondly, the SPT metal-intake actually introduces heat to the air charge... NOT the thing you want to do. Many people feel the SPT is simply a waste of money. As for the AP, you can certainly get and use that, if you plan to use an OTS (off the shelf/included) map for your ECU, then you better match the configuration they created it for... in other words, don't use a stage-2 map on a stage-0 car. This car is very sensitive to tune (most turbo cars are)... so it's best to get a custom tune, instead of any OTS e-tune.
nightspeed98
if the SPT intake is as you say, then subaru would know about this and pull them off the line because its factory backed? and does plastic pipe make a difference? can it still be used with an access port? ktmrider
Goto the Cobb website, spend some time reading, then goto the Tuning section here and read up some more.Short answer is NO-NO-NO like schwinn mentioned. In fact you wasted money on an intake, not just SPT but any for that matter. Again read up as to why, don't put your motor at risk based on public forum feedback... rao
I think is too busy designing the coffee mugs and key chains to bother worrying about the intake. The MAF issues are a fact; they won't likely destroy your engine, but you are better off with the stock intake. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
Mikie13
Short Ram intakes that are designed properly won't hurt anything, such as the SPT, K&N Typhoon, APS, Cobb...but thats about it. Its CAI's and intakes with incorrect diameter piping or that improperly locate MAFs that can cause a problem with the MAF readings, as everyone else says is correct; the ECU on Subaru's are very "sensitive." You generally have no need to replace an intake unless you are swapping up to a noticeably bigger turbo. The Stock airbox is plenty efficient and not very restrictive at all. Only thing an SRI will do for you is create some nice spool-up noise and you can hear the blow off from the BPV better.
schwinn
if the SPT intake is as you say, then subaru would know about this and pull them off the line because its factory backed? Not at all. If you ONLY did the SPT intake, you'd probably be fine. I'll leave it up to your research to see if it actually makes any real difference. and does plastic pipe make a difference? can it still be used with an access port?As others suggested, do a LOT more research before diving into any mods.
