Any reason this wouldn't work? Switchable exhaust

I used to own an '04 R32. If you are familiar with that car you'll know a popular mod was to add a switch that controlled the exhausts vacuum actuated "flapper" It essentially bypassed the muffler on one side and sounded great. Plus you could switch from loud to quiet whenever you want.

Which brings me to my idea. Install an electric cutout valve in line with one half of the exhaust after the split, and deleting the muffler on that side. With that you could run it through the stock muffler whenever you want it quiet, and could open up the other tip when you want to let it rip a bit. What I'm not sure of is if running the exhaust through the one stock muffler would restrict things too much. or if if switching between the two would screw with the tune at all (stage 1 cobb) Any thoughts? High tech cad drawing below for clarification.

It'd be pointless The restriction isn't located back there. The main restrictions are located in the UP (for years that have cats in them) and the DP. Replace the DP without bothering with the catback and you've eliminated pretty much all of the exhaust restriction, until you replace the turbo with something significantly larger.

Do some reading and searching. There are a handful of people that have messed with exhaust cutout options.

Electric cutout:

And an actual thread devoted to exhaust cutouts:

edit: Oh wait, you're not asking about performance. Just noise? There are some people here who do run with only 1 muffler, BUT I believe they all have larger exhaust piping throughout also. I'd be wary of blocking off 1 side of a stock exhaust and have to manually control it. What if I were driving around in "quiet" mode and I suddenly decided to get on the throttle hard?

I'd much rather have something like this personally:

Yes, it's for sound only. I've read an exhaust on these cars is mostly for sound only until you really starting building for power. And I wouldn't do it if I couldn't drive normally with just running the one side (ie. I wouldn't want to HAVE to switch it on just to step on it) . That's what I was worried about, I think it's only a 2" pipe or so for the stock piping after the split and that it would be to restrictive.

well a tbe can go a pretty long way even for a stock lgt. combined with a good tune should get you about 40+whp gains over stock.... all of which comes from the downpipe and tune.

Fixed.

Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs.

Why not just get an ewg and call it a day?.... holy hell is it loud

Because you can't turn an EWG on or off? OP specifically wants to be able to make noise, or stay stealth.

Personally I'd spend the money on making the car quicker and leave the noise to the ricers, but that's just me.
