215/50/17 Tires?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone installed size 215/50/17 tires on their Legacy GT?

I live in an area where the roads are not well maintained (potholes), and I feel that going from the stock 215/45/17 to 215/50/17 would provide a little better protection from the potholes.

Less chance of bending a wheel, and possibly a smoother ride also. I know the ride height will go up very slightly, but I don't think it would be drastic enough to not recommend it.

Any thoughts?

Good idea. I have 215/45-17 on my OBXT and have damaged both a wheel and a sidewall on two occasions from potholes.

The 45s handle nicely on pavement but I am tired of having to drive slow on gravel.

Thinking about doing the same thing or maybe 225/50-17 (mine's an OB, stock 225/55-17.) Hate to lose any of the Acropolis Rally fender gap, though!

Ouch1011, what wheel/offset do you have?

I have a set of stock LGT wheels (17x7) and WANT to use 215/50/17, but everyone says that they're too tall for a stock suspension (inside/strut clearance).

225/50/17 would be a dream for me, but I don't sense they will fit with +55 offset wheels and a stock suspension.

Who is "everyone"? The difference between a 215/45/17 and a 215/50/17 is only about 10 millimeters. I doubt very much that clearance would be an issue.

I must say it does make a noticeable ride height difference.

Just to give an example when I put back on my stock 215/45 tires my rally armours scrape on speed bumps which I never hit with my 215/50 tires.

Numerous other threads on tire sizes. Most say 25.4 is the MAX diameter you can have, however 215/50/17 are 25.5." The sticky at the top of the wheels/tires forum also says 235/45/17 is the TALLEST tire, which is shorter than 215/50.

I'm just concerned because at one time I did buy tires which were too big for the suspension, and $$$ selling them and having to buy different tires (not on my Legacy).

I dropped from the OEM 18" spec b wheels to 17" and went with a 215/50 for winter/all season. (Conti DWS). Ride is considerably more comfortable. Doesn't looks quite as a agressive or feel quite as well in the corners but for normal commuting or around town driving I would highly recommend it.

I agree with the 225/45 17. Just threw a set on my car. Fit well. No clearance issues. More comfortable. Not too rollie in the turns. Cut down on road noise. More traction and cut down on road noise.

Your lower road noise is probably a function of a different type/brand of tire because road noise usually increases with the use of wider tires.

Yep one of my winter tire sets is 225/50-17. They fit fine on my lowered wagon.

Here they are ,

If yours is not lowered, mine is in the photo above, you should be fine. Just watch the tight turns.

Here it is with 18's and 45's

Yeah but I am yet to find someone who has actually put a 55 series tire under the legacy gt suspension. I'm not worried about wheel well clearance since my wagon is raised an inch, I'm worried about hitting the spring perch.

Being raised an inch I'm thinking your'll be fine.

I gather your getting these tires real cheap...or why would you be asking.

These cars are fine with the standard snowtire size.

225/50/17 on my standard height 06 legacy sedan...CT is the worst for pot holes and i even want to go to 55's for winter... Anybody know the widest you can go for 18's on stock height??? I went through the awesome thread on here that shows a bunch of tire sizes but that is for a lowered car...

I understand about the pot holes, I live here too. Worst Governor ever, I find that a few more psi will help some.

I'm going to guess you'd be ok on 17's not so sure about 18's.

You can have a bent rim straighten if you need to. I have had it done a number of times. I have a wheel shop about 2 miles from work.

If 25.4 is max then why does the car come STOCK with a 25.5? Someone is off their rocker. )Seeing as how you still have enough gap to put your hand up inside the wheel well.

Does this thread talk about any type of drops or anything like that? Can we get a link plz.

Guess my 235/45R18

Diameter : 26.3

Not rubbing lock to lock is an enigma wrapped inside of a riddle I guess
