Muffler delete modification - pics and video

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone... finally getting around to trying this mod out.... I posted some preliminary photos on the Muffler Labotomy thread... but thought I would start my own since I have a bunch more photos and I didn't want to hijack his thread.

I purchased a spare set of mufflers from another member on here... intending them to be sacrificial to this cause. The first couple of photos (1 and 2) are of the muffler cut open. I used a plasma cutter to remove the entire top plate of the muffler and you can clearly see that it is a 2 chamber / single baffle design with a 90 degree long radius bend on the outlet pipe.

Next up was to do some measurements, drawings, and then some plans. The existing muffler piping in & out is ~ 1.5" diameter. I utilized 2 316L Stainless steel 45 deg fittings and some Schedule 10 316L stainless steel piping to make a spool section. Pictures 3 and 4 show the piping tacked up for test fitting. After all the measurements were nailed down... we Tig welded it all together....

Comparision photos can be seen on photos 5 and 6 of the stock muffler assembly and the muffler delete assembly.

Next up was to test fit the muffler delete pipe into the car. As you can see in the first attached photo, the pipe was fabricated to utilize the factory hanger locations.

With a little luck, the pipe slid right into place and bolted up. In pictures 2 and 3, you can see that the tip position VERY closely matches the factory tip location. The factory muffler assembly is on the drivers side... while the muffler delete pipe is on the passenger side. I plan on moving on to fabricate a drivers side muffler delete pipe as well.

Overall, I am really pleased with the outcome. It isn't obnoxiously loud... but has a good healthy boxer rumble. At 72mph on the highway there is only a little exhaust noise... I wouldn't say that it is a drone. I re-used the factory oval tip... so besides the extra pipe music... it still looks completely factory.

Photo 4 shows the muffler delete pipe mounted in place... from underneath the car.

I will try to get some video with sound to post on here for you guys... if you/re interested.

nice. My idea exactly, but I planned to leave the can around the pipe for a stock appearance. Since you went with the pipe alone, my suggestion would be to tighten up the fit to the bumper....looks a bit odd with nothing around it.

I thought about moving it up... but there were 2 concerns....

1.) Vibration and sway of the pipe causing it to contact the bumper cover or support bracing

2.) Difficulty in fabricating the bracket and pipes without having the factory piece as a reference

I thought it best to just try to duplicate the factory assembly, less the can.

That setup will be fairly tame at idle and when driving easy but will be nasty loud when the go pedal is stomped. I took my mufflers off and took the car for a ride and the above is what I noticed. Definatly not something I would be interested in but thats some nice work!

this will be what i do with the spare set -- i really want it to keep the stock look.

Here's a quick video of it that I made this morning....

It is a little chilly here this morning and the car is cold... hence the condensation from the exhaust and the backfiring. Once the car warms up .... it doesn't do that.

I think Jedi had this set up for a while. It sounded amazing at one of the meets last year.

It's gonna sound even better with my electric cutout :D
