lakepop Posted April 10, 2007 Share Posted April 10, 2007 OK...I'd admit to being electricity impaired ...BUT... this can't be a big deal. Attempted to add a flasher unit to my 07 Outback overhead brake light. My intent was to have that light "blink' ala the directional turn signals. Bought a generic 12v flasher at auto zone and installed it inline to the overhead brake light.....very simple inline circuit. But the light does not "blink" like I expected it to when I depress the brake pedal............??????? It does come on...but not blink. http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif Anyone give some insight as to why this simple mod does not work. I did it to my 01 Forester at day one and it worked ...ad naseum. Note that I tried two different flashers (both 2 pole /12v)....neither worked. Also note that the brake light does NOT work with the flasher removed...so I'm assuming that this proves I have the right power wire. I did not confirm that line is 12v....but the wire definately provides power to the light. OBieXT Posted April 11, 2007 Share Posted April 11, 2007 Trouble is the LEDs don't present enough of a load to cause the flasher relay to activate. These are normally thermal relays that use the current flowing to the lights to heat up a bi-metallic strip in them that then opens the circuit. The strip then cools, the circuit closes, and the current flow heats up the strip again. You need an electronic relay that is not dependent on the load current.
