LOL I saw that this morning. The funny thing is that I can't imagine who would buy it. The only car it will fit in is a Legacy and as far as I know they all come with one. I guess if you do something that wrecks yours then it would be handy... I can't really see any other reason to pay any money for that.

Maybe good to have a spare if one is going to hack up the one they have for the Ipod connection. More importantly, it would be nice to know what the seller did to replace the one he pulled out, as his ACC won't work.

will that work for 2.5i?

I was thinking the same thing...

does anyone know if the actual audio unit portion can be detaced from the faceplate? Since the wife's 2.5i doesn't have the fancy climate control....it would be cool if I could just swap the audio portion.

I got a response from the seller. He said that he replaced it with the MP3 one. You can probably email him and ask where he got the MP3 one at.

From looking at the manual there a section for a 6 CD MP3 player. And it seems like only the higher end Outbacks get this.

Hm, I thought Rao was the only one who swapped the unit for an MP3 one. Cool! Only place you can get them is probably at a dealership. I don't know where else you could get factory head units like that. Maybe Subaru specialty repair shops can source them somehow?

greetings to all! I'm the guy selling the silly unit on ebay. I got like a zillion questions from you guys and I finally figured out that some forum must have the auction linked. Yep, I was right and somebody was kind enough to point me here.

This is fantastic! I had no idea this site existed ('course, I never really looked either).

I bought my 2005 LGT (manual) in October and JUST tonight it hit 4000 miles. I followed the manual and had the oil changed by the dealership at 3000 miles. I alternate between driving like an old lady (I'm a male of 26yrs) and stepping on it...as you know, it's much too easy/fun to do the latter. Literally all of my friends are impressed. In fact, when I told people I was considering a subaru, I was openly mocked. All of them, I kid you not, have eaten their words :) I would NEVER have considered a 2004 Legacy or earlier but this 2005 was everything I was looking for. My last car was a 1997 Escort and I wanted something with some power. I had been drooling over a Passat for years and really like the styling both inside and out. Despite many test drives, I was never impressed with the power, especially in the v6 4-motion. The car actually hestitated whenever I pushed the accelerator. Long story short, I test drove the LegacyGT as an automatic. The power was amazing and the interior (on the limited) was very close to that of the passat (to me anyway). I opted for the manual transmission and added things like the short-throw shifter and some other extras. Somebody commented in another thread that they can't stand rental cars and can't wait to get home to their legacy. I was JUST thinking the same thing last week when I had a rental car. Tomorrow I'll have another rental and I'm not looking forward to it :(

Anyway -- I love my legacy and am looking forward to what future models subaru might have (and maybe I'll trade-up).

Now, the subject at hand -- my radio/AC unit that's on ebay. Here's the story:

My stock 6-disc changer ate all 6 of my CDs one day and I took it in to the dealer. Ironically, a few days before I was reading my manual and discovered that there is a mp3-capable unit that apparently should fit in the legacy. I called the dealer I purchased the car from and they did some research and confirmed that the mp3 unit comes in the Outback VDC but that it would work in my legacy. They sold me the unit (gave me a modest discount) and shipped it directly to me.

Meanwhile, I convinced my local dealer (in a different state than where I purchased the car) to install the mp3-capable unit. Since the part was physically the same and required no extra work, they did the swap-out without charging me extra, i.e. it was all covered under the warranty. I gave them the serial number from the mp3 unit and they added it to my car's records so now the unit is officially "part" of my car's warranty and should it break again, it will be replaced without any hassle.

Now, there's still the question of what to do with the replacement unit that subaru "owes" me as part of the warranty. They shipped the stock replacement unit to my local dealer and I simply picked it up and brought it home in a box. I'm currently waiting for subaru to crack open my broken unit and send my 6 CDs back to me. The dealership assures me they'll do it, but it takes many weeks :(

So, you've all seen the ebay sale -- I tried calling subaru's customer service and after explaining my story 4 times, the girl finally "got it" and promised to find out if there's anyway they could take the unit back and somehow give me credit. She said she'd call back. Never happened and, quite frankly, I wasn't too optimistic. So, it's up on ebay now.

You guys are right -- who would want a stock unit that most everyone has? well, apparently the 2.5i people could make it fit but I hear there may be wiring challenges. Maybe somebody wants an extra? I don't know ... I'll just be happy to recover some of the money I had to invest in the new one.

So, that's the story -- nothing fishy here, just a happy 2005 LGT owner who doesn't want an extra cd-changer sitting around :)

Cool....welcome!

I am shocked the dealer sent it to you vs. installing it. SOA requires the dealer to install warranty repair stuff vs. giving it to the owner. I know - my dealer argued with me about the ripped shift boot - I didn't want them touching my car again, especially since it was a 2 minute install.

Getting the mp3 unit from the dealer who sold me the car was easy. Convicing my new/local dealer to install it instead of the replacement unit shipped from subaru (the item on ebay) wasn't quite as straight-forward.

but in the end, they installed it and I didn't pay for the install -- I think they'll be good to work with. Time will tell.

But if this other unit doesn't sell on ebay, does anybody have some suggestions what I could do with it? I know the 2.5i people would like it but it will require some extra work.

I see you are from Collegedale, TN. I lived in Chattanooga for a long time and the Subaru dealership, Kelly, wasnt all that great to me, but I am just a 23 year old kid so I probably didnt get much respect from them anyway. Sometimes I felt like driving to Atlanta where they treated me better just to get some simply service things done but I am glad they are treating you better than they treated me.

I am on the phone with my dealer now - I've been trying to find any way to get an MP3 player in the car (other than the complicated instructions I've seen elsewhere on here). Does this unit allow an MP3 player to be plugged in - or does it just play MP3 CDs? Are the climate controls the same?

(FYI - my dealer has no idea. Do you know what the part number is for the VDC radio? The one they think it is is $759... kinda steep. But might be worth it to get MP3 playability...)

the unit is IDENTICAL to the standard 6-disc changer with the exception that one control is now labeled "text" and the letters "mp3" are written along the top.

No inputs. It plays mp3 CDs. the good news is that it played a CD/RW that had multiple sessions on it. the unit is entirely functional but its kinda on the "no frills" side. For example, I can't figure out how to make it show the time index while playing a mp3 (like it does for a regular CD). It does at least show the song titles and folder names so that's good. I don't know if it understands a playlist or not yet -- I haven't taken the time to find out. I was just thrilled that it read all the mp3s on CDs I burned back in 1998.

$759 sounds sorta right. My dealer gave it to me at invoice cost and it was in the low $600s (I'd have to double-check my invoice). Can't your dealer find out the part number for the VDC unit?
