Recommended Posts

To sum up my incident... Misfire on the higway at 70mph smoke and knocking... And #4 plug bent over from foreign debris...

It Begins...

Head looks to have survived enough to be refreshed and re-used.

Hope to talk to the machine shop tomorrow and then drop the stuff off and maybe get the pistons ordered by Thursday... Going with CP Forged pistons and I think I can get away with .25mm overbore so if that's confirmed by the machine shop I'll order those and have him do the machine work.

After that's done, I'm doing all the assembly myself. I'll be doing a full gasket kit obviously... A full set of bearings and sending my injectors out for a cleaning... as well as thoroughly cleaning everything that came off this. I don't plan on doing any more performance work than whats already done on this car, I would just like to get the forged pistons in there for a piece of mind.

Sounds like a good plan.

I was thinking the head wasn't going to be to bad. It's amazing how much the head can take and not look to bad.

Sometimes you get lucky.

When you get the gasket set, make sure the half moons are in there. Might as well get just a timing belt too ?

Yeah going to, just forgot to list that. May also upgrade the clutch and grab a tsk3 kit. Not needing a head will allow me to buy those extra items.

And your talking about the half moons that are in the heads right? What are those cutouts even for on the head?

Maybe the half moon cutouts are there to allow original machine work of the cam bearings?

That's the only thing that I could think of... otherwise its a bit odd for there to even be a cutout back there.

How about a killerb oil pick up, since you have everything apart?

Good thought there,

Check the oil pipe real closely. I just reused mine, it looked in good shape.

every little bit helps in my mind. but you are correct. I was impressed with the quality of the covert tube, welds were great and it was a very beeft product, never set my hands on a Killer B to actually compare to tho

For peice of mind, I would replace it rather than re-braze it, just something about "re-doing" something that flows engine blood doesnt sound right

Well I'm just referring to the reviews saying its way cheaper, but in reality its not a huge difference. I'll definitely be looking mine over to ensure that everything is all good with it before deciding if I will be using it, and like I said I could just run another bead of braze around it to reinforce it.

All of this came at a bit of a surprise to me, as well as my wife getting hit in her car the day before, So I am trying to get this built right and make sure it will last but I'm also trying to save as much money as possible doing so.

Just got a quote from the machine shop for around $600 for everything. Bore/hone, crank polish, head rebuild and fix a turbo bracket boss on one head.

I don't feel that bad anymore, I was expecting closer to 1k for all of that work.

150k on the crank... I don't think I need a forged one since I'm not going to add anymore to this, I actually might tone the boost down a bit... I just wanted the forged pistons so I can bury this common problem.

That's a great price from the machine shop. Valve's may be extra if you need them.

My machine shop bill was reasonable too for all I had them do.

Ive read that these cranks have a tendency to warp slightly with high miles, thats why I was asking, they all come heat treated now, so anything new is forged, just and added bonus

I don't know how true it is or how to verify on my setup, but according to this thread

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showpost.php?p=23670210&postcount=16

I have the 12200AA370 crank PN which is the same that's in the 08 and different than whats in your 06, you have the 12200AA260 Not sure what's different though. I also have different pistons which I thought was done to prevent this failure, but possibly not, so who knows really.

Well its all apart and in the back of the Jimmy... Heads block crank and rods all going to the machine shop tonight.

I don't know how this thing can hold as much power as it does... Look at the size of this crank! thats a 3/8 inch/lb torque wrench next to it... 120-960in/lb range on the wrench for reference.

I feel like I took apart a Briggs motor!

Also picking up some sort of oil pickup tube.. my screen has piston parts wedged in the edges of it way inside that I can't get out... I do not need that stuff falling free later in life... Time to replace it. I'm also glad I did NOT ever remove the banjo bolt filter so that may have saved my turbo from any debris in the oil after the regular filter, but seeing how the oil is pumped from the sump to the main filter I doubt it would have done anything anyways.

Can't remember, did you say your getting a new oil pump too ?

Does the oil go thru the oil cooler before the or after the filter ?

I believe you can take the oil pump apart and check the inside ?

I ordered my oil pump from Mike at AZP, just told him to send what he would use on my set up. I don't know which pump he sent me, I trust him.
