How to find out if my car has keyless entry?

I just bought my Outback last Saturday. The only key that came with it was one of those Home Depot copies.

 

So I immediately had two copies made of that one and hung it up. It didn't come with a remote transmitter, but I got to wondering if my car did indeed have it as a feature.

 

Is there somewhere to look for a brain box that controls the power locks remotely? Did they all have it standard?

i think most outbacks came with remote entry but i'm not sure.

 

check your year at cars101.com it will have listed whjat is standard and what was optional.

It appears that keyless entry was still a $225 dollar add-on in 1998. Is there any way to figure out if mine has it or not?

You could try to enter the 'programming mode'; for my '01 forester this is open/close drivers door and then switch ignition on/off 10 times with 20s (or something like that)....

 

If your car has keyless entry it will toot the horn and await key-fob button to be pressed.

I think the 1998 uses a different version of keyless entry than 1999+ cars.

If it exists, I can buy some factory remote fobs and program them.

 

Otherwise I can buy a cheap aftermarket kit on ebay and hook it inline with the power lock button switch in the car I guess.

If you have key less there will be a black box that says keyless on it under the drivers side dash. Very easy to see when u look under there. GL.
