Mods that void a warranty

Somewhat prompted by the following thread and my own curiosity, I was wondering what mods generally void a warranty. Now I know this is sort of a very generalized question. Of course if you mod a certain part of the motor and then have problems with that area, I think it's pretty clear no one is going to fix it under warranty. However, do any mods void the warranty overall for the powertrain and such?

I'm really asking because I am about to purchase an '07 LGT with an extended warranty. I do plan on modding but I may just wait until the warranty expires. If I drive my yearly average, it will be at least 2 years before I do any modding :(.

In the thread above, the guy is currently running at stage 2, which I personally believe voids the warranty. Yet he lists the fact that his car has the gold extended...

If the modded part can even remotely be related to the item that needs to be repaired under warranty, then you should plan on paying for that repair out of pocket. If they let you slide, consider it a gift.

Basically, no one mod will "void" your entire warranty. However anything *can* be used to void a portion of it if it fails.

Stage 2 can effectively take out alot of warranty things. For instance any powertrain portion and motor portion can be rendered useless by a stage 2 as you are pushing more power than the car was certified to have from the factory therefore they (the company) are not responsible to fix it.

However, if you put on suspension and brembos, and have a problem with the transmission, they would have a hard time proving the suspension or brakes caused the trans to fail.

This is stated about the best way possible.

And always keep in mind you pay to play. If you plan to mod you accept the responsibility that comes along with it.

IMO, the burden a proof lies with the owner to prove the mod did not cause a failure and not with the dealer to prove that the mod did cause the failure.

This is supported by a post that I read at bobistheoilguy.com by a WRX or STI owner. I believe that he had a ringland failure on an AP Stage I or II. He took it to the dealer and forgot to revert back to stock. He decided to sue SoA, but dropped it because litigation was too expensive.
