Roof Racks: Thule, Yakima, or INNO...which one?

I had a complete Yakima system on my 08 but I took it off...

I noticed that the clips that attach to the car were digging into the rubber right where the window trim is. I only had it on for a couple months but I cant imagine what kind of damage it would have done over a longer period of time.

Here are some old pics....

How bad did the rubber get damaged? I still haven't bought the rack, waiting till after christmas....have you found this happening from others?

My thule rack did the same to my rubber window trim. After I removed the rack, the rubber itself is soft and will go back to normal. I don't even see the marks anymore.

as for which one, get whichever one! they all look nice. Thule/Yakima are the most popular. Inno is great too. Most of the systems are mix and matchable, ie bike trays, ski clamps, etc. I use a yakima bike tray with a Thule base rack system.

Go with Yakima. My Yakima rack is now on the 2nd car, only had to change the towers to accommodate a completely different car. I don't like Thule's use of dedicated racks.

While oval cross bars create less noise, they also don't line up as well when you have accessories that connect between front and rear bars. Round bars don't have that issue, but can be noisy.

I prefer Thule with square bars (had aero bars and Yakima before). Yakima round bars/attachments tend to rotate which can be a major PITA when attempting to load a kayak. Square bars are cheap and hassle-free.

As for carrying snowsports gear, I highly recommend a roof box. Not sure about your area, but in Eastern Canada they use salt on roads, and skis/boards would become covered with sticky corrosive mess in no time.

BTW, I have a ski rack sitting in the closet - it looks just like the one on the snowfiend's photo. Was thinking of selling it...

Racks seem to be in fashion now (especially with Subarus, escpecially with Californai cars... for some reason) but the end result is that you can't beat a box for storage.

Boxes today are sleek and cool (have been for many years), but style is in the eye of the beholder!

^ I'd like to see you put a bike into a roof box.

Running a rack or basket or box for the look is straight up douchebaggery.

My friend, that is why I have a wagon.... the bike gets smashed in the back.... (insert inappropriate porn reference here).

And I agree about the basket.... totally lame. The Thule PlayPen was the silliest invention ever. I have NEVER seen a basket full of crap... and I live near whistler...;)

it wasnt too bad but i cant say for sure how bad it could have gotten if i had left it on longer.

but the rubber did kinda pop back up but thats only because i took the rack off completely.

i say get the rack if you plan on doin activities that require a roof rack for the life of the car. if you take it on/off, the rubber tearing apart might become an eye sore for you... thats just my opinion
