Finally: '99 Outback Limited detailed

Recommended Posts

Its been a labor of love and hate. I got it with a blown up engine that had thrown a rod though the block. After getting a pullout engine installed and running and then having to pull it out again for head gaskets it was finally time to concentrate on the rest of the car. It had sat in the back yard at a friend's house; after his nephew ran it without oil, for many months covered in leaves and had mould growing on some panels and the interior filled with paint cans, soda cans, old Mcdonalds take out bags and other junk, so this is a BIG improvement. Still need to replace the cracked fog lights before inspection for permanent tags.

Literally spent like 6-8hrs with the polisher getting it to look like this. Had I not used a polisher, my hands would have fallen off. I guess the previous owners werent that good drivers 'cos the front and back bumpers have a lot of scratches and bumps. Will be painting the front middle section black to match the back, so that'll hide some of it.

still some rust that I need to take care of when I get the time, but in general, the engine bay is clean...

Roof rails restored to a nice black color...

Headlights polished a bit to get some of that haze and yellow out of it, still not perfect but it'll pass inspection. Will wet sand it and buff it out to look good as new when I get the time later...

Paint splattered on the dash; previous owner used to paint houses or something like that. Much better than it was, still working on it.

thanks! not many before pics, had to do a quick wash before the wife saw the condition it was in when I bought it, lol.

Just ordered Hella 500FF's to replace the fog lights; left one's lens is cracked and right is hazy. $75 shipped for the 500FF's from Amazon was better than $135++ each for new OEM units

Totaled everything today finally after getting permanent tags ... price of car, engine, head gasket replacement with timing belt and water pump, marker light and fog lights, misc. other little things, etc. came in at less than $2000 ... I'd say that's quite a nice project that could turn a profit if I decide to sell her later!

Bumping an old post here, but what did you use on the engine bay? It looks fantastic in the pic!

Detailing the exterior isn't new to me, I've got a huge bin filled with my DA stuff and all sorts of products. Haven't yet detailed an engine bay, have any tips?

(I really want a steam cleaner!)

It was either Purple Power or Simple Green, a bit of scrubbing with a brush and then a pressure washer. They supposedly accelerate rusting, so its important to wash it off real good.
