jazzy just wanted to say nice shipping time, in laws told me it arrived this morning (i dont ship to my place as its an apartment and the guy has been known to leave stuff at the door :() and installing tomorrow after a visit to the subie doctor (aka dealer). One quick question though, is the RCA or phono connector on the ipod connector the input to the GLI? Guessing that if it is RCA then i need an adapter (male RCA->male phono), or if its the phono then I need (male RCA->female phono) for the aux input? Thanks for the help and the speedy shipping.

The ipod cable has dual outputs - both RCA & 1/8" stereo. You can ignore the RCA outputs. The iPod cable connects to the GLI - and the GLI connects to the aux-in board. Here - check it out on the iPod Pro kit installation diagram:

So got most of it installed today, still being picky about how I want the wiring run so I am back to it tomorrow. Had a couple of issues with getting the player to accept cds while testing the install. As a side note for testing, i put the cd changer back on, attached the 4 screws, put the face plate back on, went to test, didnt work, took everything apart again, reassembled up to putting face plate on, didnt work, put top panel on with screws, worked just fine. Maybe that top panel has something to do with getting the seating of the cd changer correct, who knows? Anyways tomorrow I am going to make it pretty. Drove it home tonight with it partially hooked up and it sounded phenomenal!!!!!!

has anyone does this successfully with cleansweep? i dont fully understand if this mod is pre or post amp, but it sounds like it should work.

From Jazzy MT himself

"The aux-in utilizes the pre-amp circuitry in the radio - literally splicing into the line level out of the CD player."

I see no reason why this will not work for the CS users

Will this unit work in a 2005 Outback VDC ? This is the 6-disk mp3 player.

The possible conflicting elements are:

will a disk full of blank mp3 work the same way as a blank audio CD?

There are steering wheel controls ... is that more cabling to the radio?

Has anyone had any problems converting this one?

based on how i understand it works, you should not have any problems, except a pause when you swap discs. you could however leave the blank cd on repeat, until u want to listen to the other discs. thats what i plan to do with my mp3 6disc in my obxt

i dont have clue about ur steering wheel controls

Several folks w/Spec B's & VDC Outbacks have installed it w/no probs. Silent MP3's also works fine.

Awesome!

I found this thread after purchasing an 06 Outback last week and was trying to figure out what to do with the radio, it needs serious upgrade - but first things first - my iPod.

Looked at all my options and found the jazzy aux mod and ordered it. It was at my house in 3 business days.

It came with everything I needed, had great instructions, and is now installed in my car! It took about 2.5 hours and was really simple. Works great and sounds much better than fm modulator.

Thanks very much jazzy.

One note on the install that may not be clear in the instructions. With one cd unit, before pulling the unit out of the console, you have to remove the climate control housing from the console face plate (this is mentioned in the instructions), there are two little plastic clips and two screws on each side that hold the white climate control housing in place remove those (just like the instuctions say) but you also should remove the mounting bracket on the right side to allow the climate control unit to seperate more easily.

my $.02

Now i just need an amp and some better speakers... suggestions? I am moving into this car from an 05 yukon denali that had a factory bose stereo with 16 speakers and a sub... i am a bit spoiled but I LOVE my new Subura and my new gas milage. I think this car has the same if not more ground clearance that my yukon.

If anyone has suggestions on amp and speakers i woud love to hear it.

Well, there are two ways to do it... Hard and easy

Hard - Strip off some insulation from the red and black wires that connect to the lighter. Solder on the power leads from the iPod cable, then wrap with electrical tape.

Easy - Go to Ace, Home Despot, Lowes, etc. and look for inline splice taps. It is like a vampire that will clamp on to the existing wire, teeth will cut the insulation and connect to the wires. I think 18-22 AWG splices should work dandy. They are pretty self-evident in how they work. The through hole goes around the existing wire, the non-through hole takes the wire from the iPod cable. You need two, one for each wire.

I like easy!

Will this "splice" disable any use of the actual outlet? like if I do this and I have my ipod running could I still plug in a phone charger?

Jazzy, does the ic-rca cable come w/ instructions?

I've been meaning to do this for a while now, so I can mount my ipod on the vent (any suggestions/mounts for this?) and have all wires hidden and running through the vent. Right now I'm using the belkin lineout/charge device which requires me to still run the ipod cable out of the center console.

thanks guys.

No - splicing into the power wires will not affect the functionality of the outlet. I spliced into the power wires for the cigarette lighter for my XM and my wife often plugs in her phone charger to that same outlet on road trips w/no probs.

No - just the basic installation diagram I provide on the site:

http://www.jazzyengineering.com/ProKit-iPod2.pdf

As ZinFreak and others have said - basically you just need to hook it up to power to provide charging (actually, you don't need to - it will function w/o charging if you want too) and plug it in.

Anywhere there is 12v power in the car works to splice into. Just match colors, or be sure of what the wires are before splicing. Of course, the back of the cigarette lighter is most often easiest to access and closest to the stereo.

In some cases, however, sometimes another route is easier or better. Take my Pioneer head unit in my Jeep....I bought the Sirius unit for Sirius stereo in the headunit and decided to splice the power for the Sirius unit into the power for the stereo. When soldering my harness onto my new headunit wires, I just soldered the 2 power wires for the Sirius unit in the middle of the stereo unit's harness wires. This was not only easier, but better in general since I only wanted the Sirius powered when the stereo is powered and not running anytime the car is on.

Is the output from the ic-rca at line level?

err just answered my own question, but does anyone know how the ic-rca output/amplification compares to the belkin line-level/charger?

AFAIK - none of the cables/adapters do anything to amplify the signal - they just tie into the line level signals the iPod provides.

Jazzy- can I ask how many of these bad boys you've sold over this past while..?

I am pulling the trigger this summer on a full-blown install and will be ordering this part as well.

Being in the audio industry for 10 years now and to be riding around in a completely stock audio environment is borderline criminal, on my part.

Thanks for developing this!

Installed today in my 2005 OB VDC. The hardest part of the whole process is getting the head unit out of the dash without damaging all of the plastic trim pieces. The directions were VERY helpful.

Thanks Jazzy. Do you have any of these for other cars or other model years?

Enough to become dependent on the extra income - not enough to quit my underpaid day job. ;) Honestly, I lost count quite awhile ago - I've been sellin' 'em for about a year & 1/2 now, but they've gotten pretty slow in the last couple months.

Nope - I just needed a way to hook my XM up to my Outback, I didn't develop anything else. ;) I can get PAC audio parts at "dealer" price and they make *lots* of other vehicle adapters, but so far, no one has requested one specifically from me since they're available tons of other places (who actually stock them) already.

Anyway - thanks for the kind words everybody. Still nice to hear my "second job" is appreciated - I know I still use mine every day. :)

I finally got around to installing this in my GF's Outback. I bought the unit back in March I think.

Anywho, the install went pretty well. I installed an XM Sportscaster receiver in the cubby above the clock. It fits great!! and the back light matches the red. I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

One thing I did notice is that the cd volume & the XM receiver volume is a decent amount quieter then the radio, (the cd player is quieter then it used to be). I can turn the volume on the CD player all the way up to 40, and it's reasonably loud, but it's not really loud. Is this normal, have others experienced this?

Here's some pics of the install.
