Speeding is about to cost you a lot more in VA

gist of the story is that in order to fund the new transportation package - VA is adding additional fines (or registration fees, as they put it) on to certain traffic violations.

Reckless driving well net you an additional $1000, $2250 additional for a first time DUI offense, and $1000 for driving without a license.

i know, i just heard/read about this. its crazy stuff. so if your a safe driver, you'll get new roads for free, while the bad drivers are the ones paying for it all.

isn't like failure to signal an additional $1000 fee? crazy.

My trooper friends were working Laser on a local limited access interchange. In 4 hours they wrote 192 tickets for no less than 15MPH over posted speed limit of 65MPH.

The topper was a guy ticking at 110. Two of the 'chasers' on motorcycles flipped a coin to see who got to go get him.

That little ticket cost the individual a day in jail, loss of his vehicle, and fines yet to be assessed.

It could only have been worse if he was racing somone else, or intoxicated.

I think the fines are excessive. I do not understand how they can tack on a $1000 dollar fine for reckless on roads such as 81. Hell Trucks cruise at 80 mph on that road.

So if someone has a perfect driving record they are gonna stick it to them, makes no sense.

and radar detectors are still illegal too. MD ftw!!!

If I lived in VA i would use a detector anyway - much cheaper to give it up than to pay a serious fine

FWIW, They can't confiscate detectors. They can record the make/model/serial number, but since a detector is not contraband it is not inherently illegal to own. A LEO may say he will hold it until court, but that is not a requirement or permitted by the statute. It goes down as an equipment violation, so no points for the detector.

I'm with you. Lived in Va. my whole life, always had a detector on hand.

Now I need a 'Laser Parking Aid' though.;)

What I want to know is why is driving without a license only a $75 fine, and $900 civil penalty but speeding could net you a $200 fine and $1,050 civil penalty..... Shouldn't driving without a license be considered a more serious offense?

The most effective way to try to understand laws in Va is to not use your brain. That's where you are going wrong.

I absolutely hate it when I drive into VA for going to mrytle beach or anything down south. I feel like I actually have to pay attention to my right foot when driving instead of letting the car choose the speed. I couldnt live without a radar detecter!

hmmm maybe i should pick one up. what is the fine for an equipment violation. And can they only fine you if they pull you over and see it?

My brother was caught today. 20 mph over, though my brother claims he wasnt speeding the fast and the officer told him that he was going after someone else when he caught him and estimated using radar hidden behind the trees. COnvient that it was the 20 mph that the article cites gets you a heaftier fine. The officer then told him that he will have to pay $100 for every point already on his liscense and the additional points even though this was prior to the July 1st initiation date.

Any thoughts?

so what happens when the cop see's it? There is no fine, and he can confiscate it until the court date? Does nothing else happen?

Yes, VA already had RDDs ("radar detector detectors") in-use. VG2 is a definite, and it's known by public record that they already have Spectre units - just that currently, no-one as-yet can visually confirm that they're actually in-use.

Most of the high-end detectors (i.e. the top-flight Bel/Escort models and the V1) will protect you from VG2 detection, but it's also been verified that EVERYTHING leaks sufficiently to trigger Spectre.

Your only protection against Spectre is the Bel STi-Driver, which offers sufficient cloaking/shielding to prevent detection.

^ I address some of the issues regarding RDD evasion, as well as the "tactical" use of the Bel STi-Driver (see post #48 on the next page of that thread).

:)

Oh, and since LIDAR is a primary threat in VA, as highlander was so kind to point out to y'all, I'd also second his recommendation/suggestion of a good active laser jammer and/or as many passive protective measures as you're willing to undertake - or even BOTH.

Thank you TSI-WRX for the follow up. Been away so here goes responses to other posts.

VTGT: I've run a detector for years. BEL STI remote (1st gen) and now a RX65Pro. If stopped, and the officer sees it, I will get an equipment ticket (figure $50-75 + Court costs).

LIDAR is a huge issue in VA, as is Ka Radar. Smaller localities typically are still running K band, which has a good intercept range. Ka is very short range. A good Radar operator will tag you with Ka about the same time your detector alarms, and you see him. {hint: watch the brake lights of the cars in front of you, and don't be the fastest thing on the road}.

LIDAR is spreading due to decreased cost and some new promotions offered to departments towards purchasing. Never run a jammer so I'll defer to others on their functionality. My RX65Pro will pick up a laser hit, but after the fact.

Locals here only use LIDAR in daylight so they can focus on the plates. State is using it a night (as the crimson twinkle in my eye told me Sunday night).

VG-2 is a non-issue with the state. Too many falses, and no return on their investment. Don't know about Spectre use, but I'll find out and report.
