175,000 miles and the clutch is slipping under any kind of substantial power applied

I see you can get a perfection brand clutch at advanced auto for 185 dollars (w/ 50 off coupon) and pep boys will install it flywheel resurfacing for around 450 (after 10% off coupon) plus the cost of the fluilds.

Anyone know what fluid you need and how much it costs? Pep boys said it may require subaru specific expensive hydraulic fluid.

Also anyone have advice on what they paid for a clutch job and if it was a good or bad place to go.

I'm not a fan of going to dealerships if I don't have to.

i did it myself.

if you have to take it to a shop, DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT take it to pep-boys. take it ANYWHERE else.

as for the trans.... theres your first hint. "expensive hydraulic fluid"? theres nothing hydraulic about a manual trans.

i used regular fluid in mine and it works fine 30k hard miles later.

go around to other shops and get a quote. where are you located btw? someone might know a subaru specialist in the area.

Manual transmission fluid is pretty much any 75w-90 GL-5 rated gear oil. I've used many different fluids, from walmart supertech synthetic blend that goes for around $5/qt I think, to expensive amsoil and red line gear fluid that goes for around $15/qt. You don't need any special fluid, but a synthetic fluid will help improve cold weather shifting.

I paid $1362 to have subaru replace my clutch. I understand I overpaid, especially with how much the dealer charges for parts. But it's the price I pay for preferring to go to the dealer for more complex work on my car.

Dont think that just because you go to the dealer, you have professionals working on your car. My mom took her forester in for a clutch for the same reason, they ended up destroying the 5mt in more then one way. The car still dosent shift right.

I would go with a OEM/Exedy clutch for a routine replacement. Parts run shy of $200 (Clutch pack no Flywheel). If you want to replace the FW have it resurface or simply buy a new one the price is negligible.

As far as shops I wouldnt go to Pepto-Boys but if your local branch has a good rep that is a good price. MY favorite Shop charges $520 flat fee for clutch jobs and they are Subaru specific so that is a decent price.

Parts wise:

Exedy KSB04

06-09 WRX/LGT Flywheel

OEM Throw Out Bearing

Stay OEM if you're not modded past stage 2 tune.

As for oil, DO NOT USE OVER THE COUNTER GEAR OIL. This will only cause problems in your tranny. Use Subaru Extra-S gear oil, which is designed for our trannys. There are several threads not to use the over the counter gear oils, even myself have tried this once and started having tranny issues. Switched back to Extra-S and everything returned back to normal. You 'll thank me later.

True Dat! I went to a Mach V recommended Redline + Motul Gear 300 mix works wonders. Extra-S is equally as great came price overall

What kinds of problems will you get with over the counter gear oil? I've tried extra-s, and while I may be in the minority, I wasn't impressed. Dealerships don't even use extra-s in our cars, because any GL-5 75w-90 gear oil is fine. You can even use a straight 80w, 85w, or 90w if you wanted to, but 75w-90 is the best choice for the majority of people. Just posting the image for the OP so he can see what the factory service manual recommends.

*I never noticed this, but the 2005 FSM doesn't list a "2.5L non-turbo" category. The gear oil recommendation is the same for non-turbo cars nonetheless.

How can you say Dealerships don't use Extra-S for the standard transmission?!?! My local dealership only uses Extra-s for all standard Subaru transmission. When I used Mobil 1 gear oil it started grinding 4th gear, which several other members have complained about. Switching back to Extra-S the problem was solved and no more problems occurred.

Ive ran SuperTech for 60K miles no problems winter or summer but I notices that around 130K miles my tranny started to whine ever so slightly btwn 4th and 5th gear shifts.

So I went the Mach V route and the whine is gone. I should say ANY 75w90 GL-5 is good in lower mileage gearboxes but over time and as the miles rack up I think a designer fluid keeps the synchros in better shape. NO matter what they will fail just a matter of time and driving style can lengthen or shorten that time span.
