Kinugawa Turbo Review

Recommended Posts

Hi folks, figured I would ask in this post. Anyone know if this kit would work on our cars?

My turbo is starting to exhibit oil leakage in the housing, per the dealership. So looking at an upgrade of the above variance.

Trying to get an answer from Kinugawa themselves. When i asked if it fits, 08+wrx/legacy, they said it should as long as you have a "triangle oil sump" at least for the manifold portion, but no answer on the down pipe.

If, by "triangle oil sump", they mean like an STI oil pan, then yes we do. If you want a twin-scroll setup, this seems like a cheap way to get into one. If you're planning to stay with a top mount, you may need a TS topmount as well, but I'd verify that the turbo compressor outlet really does fit the USDM LGT SS TMIC, because they are different. And it seems strange that this is for an STI when the STI's use the side-discharge compressor outlet. Yeah, there's a couple questions in my mind about this.

And wait, not even a a process west top mont would work with it? well that goes this idea out the window....

It's listed as "WRX STI" but those appear to be search engine key terms perhaps. The compressor outlet appears to fit OEM USDM LGT style intercooler.

Bruce is fast with his responses usually. I had actually just talked to him today in regards to a bigger/better setup.

It seems that clean, regulated (not too much, not too little, but just right) oil pressure, is key. Dirty/contaminated oil, and the journal bearings get prematurely worn, leading to issues with balance and then seals. Too much oil pressure, and the seals get compromised and then you have shaft and bearing issues.

Hi,

how can you know what pressure to put in? The original turbo and the kinugawa have the same pin hole for the oil intake.

If there was an issue with the pressure or and the dirty/ contaminated oil the Mit Turbo would have also failed, no?

I am glad I still kept the old bugger too as it keep me running :)

Cheers.

My Kamak TD05-20G is still going strong after more than 20000km and many many WOT runs.

A friend of mine blew his brand new FP Green on his Evo in less than 5000km. No overboosting or unusual abuse.

Luck plays a part too.

This is what is scary, luck plays a part too...

I was not expecting to change the turbos that quickly... It was bought and bolt to last... Unfortunately it didn't :( Bad luck or bad manufacturing...

If it's an STI SD compressor, PW has a fitting for that.

On the LGTs, the banjo bolt orifice determines, pretty much, how much oil and pressure gets to the journal bearings, all else equal. There have been reports of issues with too large and orifice, causing blown seals, or too small an orifice, causing oil starvation. Banjo bolt filter screen is also a potential issue.

The picture and the description are confusing. TS LGTs have a different style TMIC.

Hi All,

I received a partial refund from kinugawa, the refunded me the first turbo minus the paypal charge. This is good news as I am less at a loss there.

When I got the time I might take the turbo to a specialist who will tell me why the failure on turbo 2.

Happy weekend to all :)
