ugotnerice
I have a 1997 legacy with a ej22 5 speed. The check engine light is on for the knock sensor but my problem is that when im driving my rpm gauge will go crazy, up and down, sometimes at 0 but the car is still running and accelerating so the rpms should be climbing steady, I also notice that the CEL light gets brighter and dimmer as this happens and sometimes i hear a click from a relay or something? anyone have any idea what would cause this? Tr00b
Could be alternator and or voltage issues or loose wires in the cluster. There are multiple clicks that can come but turn your HVAC and cruise off and try again
ugotnerice
thank you, turns out my alternator was bad but after install and driving for 5 minutes the problem came back. it has to be something electrical as when it cuts out then the temp gauge spikes and then when the CEL light comes bright again then the temp goes back down to normal and runs normal as well. 93ej22
loose or dirty ground wire would be my guess
Osei
The most common is the ground has broken on the back of the tach on the circuit board. A search for post by JohnEgg will show pics and a fix, If it continues you will get a CEL for torque converter lockup as the engine revs go through the TCU to tell it what speed the engine is at. This will come and go depending on how long the revs are not registering . Just have to remove the tach and resolder. O.
johnegg
relays clicking, unplug the green test connectors under the dash. they are plugged in for testing only.
