recommendation on bearing replacement

Recommended Posts

A few months ago, a mechanic told me after my annual state inspection that 2 of my wheel bearings are bad. I think it was one on the front and one on the rear. I didn't have him do anything then cause it was holiday season and I needed my car back. I've finally got time to get it done now, but I'll have to go to a different garage so I don't know which ones are bad and how many. I was thinking of ordering the bearings online myself and taking them in to the shop to have them put on so that I could be sure they were a quality brand of bearing. Does that make sense, or should I just let the new shop figure out which ones are bad and order whatever brand of bearing the local part house has? If I buy them myself, is there a recommended brand or are they all about the same?

The other issue is that I had both rear bearings replaced a couple years ago by a dealer and had it covered under the 2005 bearing recall/TSB issue. But I think that coverage only went to 100k miles, and I'm at 110k now. Am I correct to assume that I'm on my own to replace any bearings that are bad, even if they're the ones the dealer replaced 2 years ago?

And if I'm getting 2 bearings replaced now, should I just assume the others will go bad soon and just replace all 4 how to save me the trouble of doing this again soon?

One, yes you are out of warranty coverage.

Two, if you are doing two and can afford 4 do all four, if you plan to keep the car and cant DIY

Three, you should order online and look for the MOOG or TIMKEN ive only eve used either in my vehicles good price and quality

You could replace the bad ones if you dont plan to own the car for much longer.

If you only want to do the ones that are bad and hold off due to cost, the best way to check is to take the brakes off and spin the bearing. You should be able to feel the bearing be rough compared to the good bearing.

Doing all 4 is preventative maintenance but they may not go for another 5000 miles or might go tomorrow. So I would say they aren't a priority until they make noise.
