Fuel Filler Caps

Recommended Posts

I've gotten the CEL a few times after filling my tank, even though I make sure my filler cap is twisted on tight. It's the one where the cruise control light flashes and the cruise won't operate. I just re-tighten the cap and disconnect the positive battery cable to re-set.

The question is, does anyone replace the filler cap every so often? The aftermarket cap manufacturer I'm buying from recommends replacing a cap every three years. I've never replaced a cap.

I only replaced mine on my 05 beacuse I broke the plastic tie cord.

I twist it about 4 clicks and close the gas door.

CC will alway's flash when you get a CEL.

You reset the ECU when you leave the negitive cable off for 15 minutes. When restarting the car after that, leave the key in ON for 10 seconds then start it.

Doesn't matter which battery cable you take off, pick the one that's easiest to access.

But if you get CEL often you should have a code reader to check. You may have a cracked ventilation hose or something else that's causing problems.

This should go into the 4th gen forum.

^ This. Also, check the rubber ring/seal on your cap. Is it cracked? Does it pass a leak-down test with a vacuum tester? If not, probably time to replace it. If it appears fine, then lube the seal with SuperLube or another type of silicon lube and that should take care of the issue. It will also allow the cap to go a bit "tighter" too, which doesn't hurt.

If I get another CEL, I'll get a code check. I got the new cap yesterday and so far, so good.

My gas cap fix wasn't one.

Get a code reader, that will give a more definitive answer on where to look, you may even look in the completely wrong area unless you know what code there's behind the CEL.

A code reader is cheap compared to a visit to the workshop for something simple and stupid.

Got the typical PO171. I've been smelling exhaust in the cabin so I'm thinking it might be something other than the intake manifold gasket.
