i thought the belt when you pop your hood and look down was your timing, but its not..... what it that belt? thats what i need

You're probably talking about the accessory belt -- if you do end up changing it make sure you draw (or have) a diagram that shows where exactly the belt goes around each pulley. It's not fun to guess how a serptentine belt is supposed to go, and some car parts don't like to run backwards.

^the subaru belts are so small and simple. If you cant remember how they go, then you should not be touching the car. I agree thouhg that this is a good idea for other cars with a longer mor complicated belt path.

I haven't looked too closely at my subaru's belts -- but I once watched two guys spend 2+ hours fitting a serpentine belt onto a ford escort that they thought they had figured out.

Definitely do your clutch belt at the same time! You might not need to change it, but 90% of what you need to remove to get to it is accomplished when you do the timing belt. I also second Kale auto, awesome customer service, and I think if you mention you're a member of the internet you get free shipping.

Hey, what exactly does a serpentine belt do?

I think it does everything an accessory belt does (AC, power steering, etc), but its arranged in an ultraconvoluted serperntine matter -- like this:

that's the diagram for the for escort zx2 serpentine belt.

so - as to what a serpentine belt does - it generally ensures that people will take their car to the dealer when they have a belt problem.

Hey guys have a 05 legacy gt run fine the question is my girlfriend has a acura 3.0cl v6 Her belt snapped not the timing belt the alternator belt I think thats what it is called?? Well anyways I put a new belt on it and it was rubbing on the idle pulley and smoking and pretty much burning through the belt. So I took the Idle pulley off and saw that it did not want to spin at all so I went and bought one from autozone. Got back to the car installed the new idle pulley put the belt on and still the same rubbing. Once i get the belt on i cant move the idle pulley any direction which I think is normal but it spins fine when it is off. Im hoping it is something i am doing wrong. My buddy told me to loosen it to tried that and it just tightened back up which is obvious it would do that since it wants to spin that way. Please help I hate Acura's just want to get this thing over with.
