franklin
Im in the market for a portable GPS system as a Christmas present for my son. I dont know anything about them and they seem rather pricey. Could some one with some knowledge direct me to a good unit?
NY Dragon Slayer
I have a Garmin 2610 . and love it. I use it in all my cars and even on the motorcycle . the only minus is it has no internal batteries for out of the car use eg hiking , rest stops inside the diner. other that that i love it and i get to keep it when i sell the car. what ever unit you get make sure it has functions to download your routes and other info back to your pc for latter review. mwiener2
are you looking for a dedicated Car unit, or a handheld? if you're going for a handheld that works in cars, i'd go with the garmin GPS MAP60 I have that one. It works wonderfully in the car, but it's a little harder to operate and get directions from than the others. The tradeoff is that it is battery powered, waterproof, shockproof, and floats. I use it everywhere I go. My Mods List (Updated 8/22/17) 2005 Outback FMT Running on Electrons

lheinlein
I have the Magellan 760 and have no regrets. It's frequently uncannily accurate, as if it really has "eyes". Two thumbs up.
DAP
I like the iQue 3600. Doubles as a palm pilot which is how I use it most of the time. Comes with maps of the entire US, but you need to buy a 2GB SD card to put them all in the iQue at the same time. SVXWRX
garmin c320 - uses a flash memory card instead of a harddrive (more durable). just buy a cheap big mem card on ebay and it will hold more maps than you'll be able to use.

recuomo
I also have the c340. Make sure you download the latest software upgrade to prevent the unit from "freezing up" on map re-drawing.
cjk911
We just got a new ambulance at work that has a Pioneer AVIC-D1 installed. It's a neat toy but I find it difficult to figure out. I wouldn't buy it for myself.
