Plug n Play Aux-in mod for 2005 6cd radios

Bummer bryan. It looks like the same radio. I can't understand why they'd change the pinouts. The whole setup looks like it's meant to be scalable & inter-compatible. If you can think of anything else to try, I (and other 2.5i owners) appreciate it, but I understand your frustration. You're sure you have the ribbon cables plugged in all the way?

Well, I took out the board and put everything back together. When I turned on the key, the CD would accept a CD but it made a lot of noise. I tried it a couple of times and it made a screeching noise each time. After about 3 times, the CD player went dead and wouldn't eject the CD. It looks like I'll be going to the junkyard to find another.

crap...well, you could always play dumb at the dealer & try to get them to replace it for free. It's always possible your CD player died for an unrelated reason (unlikely, but not impossible). Anyway, I'm sorry dude. This obviously didn't turn out how we planned. Keep us updated & I'd like to help out if I can. (I'm feeling pretty guilty right about now) :(

It sounds like something mechanical is broken or jammed in the CD player though, which is weird.

Well, I took everything back apart again, and made sure everything was pushed all the way in and the ribbon was lined up the right way. I put it back in the car but it still had the same problem. I don't see how your board could have messed it up...

Something bad mechanical happened & I'm starting to think it's probably unrelated to the board or other electrical connections. I know i've seen something about someone else's cd freaking out & having problems accepting disks...

That still sucks it isn't working right. If you end up taking it to the dealer, or find a junkyard radio, keep us updated. I don't think the board probably caused this, but I still feel somewhat responsible asking you to try & install it.

Ok, I put everything back to the way it originally was, and the CD player is working. It makes a lot of noise when inserting or ejecting a disc, though.

Is it mechanical noise you're talking about or noise coming through the speakers?

Another successful install and happy customer! I have hooked up a Rio Karma 20 gig MP3 player. It sounds excellent, much better than the wired FM modulator.

Nathan, thank you for developing this product and selling it for such a reasonable price. This is a great product and the instructions and service are excellent.

Thanks again,

Peter

Just wanted to update, that I installed the GLI from Radioshack ($16.99) and the slight hum noise that I heard when the engine was running is gone. In short, it works perfectly now! (w/iPod 10gig and Belkin adapter kit)

Vote for best mod ever!

Ok, I finally did my install yesterday afternoon, and it all went pretty well. I found it much easier to remove the stereo a second time, having done some exploratory surgery back in January, and this time I even remembered to reconnect the emergency blinker button. (Thankfully my wife never realized it had stopped working... :D) My only suggestion for improvement would be to work on the description of how to connect the circuit to the ribbon cable. I would phrase it in terms of which direction the contacts on the ribbon cable should face WRT the circuit. (e.g. IIRC, when connecting the cable from the CD changer to the board, the contacts should be facing the resistors.)

If you are planning to do this mod and haven't yet removed your stereo you might want to check out my blog entry, where I've posted some tips:

http://www.n8gray.org/blog/2005/10/10#aux-in

The sound is very good! I've only been able to use the headphone out of the iPod so far, but even that sounds quite acceptable. When my belkin kit arrives I'll be using the line out, which should be better. I'll also learn if I have to reopen everything to install a GLI, which will probably be the case...

Thanks again to centerpunch for making this mod possible and jazzymt for making it easy!

I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but my install was successful and sounds great.

iPod 3G 15GB sounds great, but make sure you take the line out from the dock connector (I used Belkin's power adapter with line out, ran the 1/8" aux-in wire to my center console). It it much louder (and distortion-free) than anything the headphone jack can put out.

...having my JL Audio Clean Sweep installed???

Because apparently the Clean Sweep has an AUX input and a switch that can be mounted up front to go from stock OEM headunit to AUX (i.e. my laptop for DVD, MP3, Internet and Navigation)!!!

Price is no object...I care about sound!!!

For that matter, why post on this thread about the CleanSweep at all? I mean...it looks like a decent little device, if a tad expensive, but it's kind of random?

Anyway, someone else bought the board & sucessfully installed it in a 1CD Legacy w/o problems & it works (didn't know they had a 1CD when I sold it to them). So, it's definitely possible. I'd still throw a bucket full of warnings & disclaimers at anyone with a 1CD radio as they seem much less protected than the 6CD modules & therefore easier to damage. It does, however, work...

Thanks again for the other compliments/votes/motions too guys :)

Why does the headphone output on the Ipod only work well with headphones? I was against the whole Belkin cord fix (didn't want to spend the extra $50) but after the third time having the batt. run out on my Ipod I pulled of the freeway and bought one. The sound quality though the Belkin is awesome and no more low volume issues. It may be a little pricey but I must say it is well worth it.

Once again thanks to Jazzy for making this so easy and affordable for all us Subaru Wankas.

There are two reasons why headphone jacks are not suitable for line level audio:

1) They are post-amplified to drive headphones, adding distortion to the signal.

2) They are lower voltage than line-level outs, requiring the highest possible amplification to get a usable signal, and by then, it's even more distorted because you're at the max out for the headphone amp.

Line level outs ideally run as high voltage as practical. There are extremely high quality line level signals for some exotic equipment now operating as high as 18 volts. Obviuosly you have to match the receiving & sending equipment to utilize this, but essentially, headphone & line levels don't really match. They're close enough for "if that's all you've got" use, but not really intended to be used together.
