overheating but only under HEAVY Load

Recommended Posts

i cant think of what my problem could be. I'm overheating but only under load. Normal driving my needle is beneath half but as i decide i'm going to run the car and i get up to 180-200 the needle starts going up. I ease off the gas a tad and it goes back down.

I've changed, fans, thermo stat, radiator and its a brand new waterpump and my head gaskets are fine. Only thing i notice is once in a while my top hose is totally suctioned down.

PLEASE HELP.

I wasn't sure what it would be but I did a quick search and identified a very probable cause.

There could be a blockage of some sort in the line from your overflow / reservoir hose. Therefore the system could actually be low but it appears fine while looking at the reservoir. With it cool, open the radiator cap and look in there. (this is what my research led me to as far as the suctioned down upper hose)

Also, when was the water pump done? Has the heat been ran since it was put in? Maybe air in the system somewhere.

My mom's old crappy 95 Contour would do similar things. Driven around town it was fine but as soon as I hit the freeway with it, it would start to overheat. It also had a faulty cap that wouldn't hold pressure like it should and the coolant would slowly escape as steam. That's another option I suppose. I put a new cap on hers and it was good from there.

An air bubble in the system is a good possibility.

Jack up the right front corner of the car high as you can. remove the cap from the turbo cooling tank. start the car and cycle the heater. watch for air bubbles to come out. Top it off as needed.

I use either Peak or Prestone coolant.

By "Hard" what do you mean?

Both my LGT and my STi would start to climb up to the Hot mark on the Temp Gauge when I would track them hard for about 4-5 laps. Drop down to 7/10th for a few laps and it would drop back down.

i tried burping the system but not your way so i'll do that and see but i dont think it's air in the system.

and @AZP Installs what i mean by hard lets say i'm doing a quarter mile, when i'm half way through the needle will start to edge up. Only doing 180-200 does it move.

@Zander i changes by cap but think i'll try another one and there arent any clogs in the lines.

The water pump is brand new but it has two ports at the front, could it be one of the ports is not properly blanked off?

Do a compression test to rule out headgasket issues.

An air bubble can be a culprit, but so can other issues as well, make sure that the air intake under the bumper is clear of objects (some people here puts extra lights there :spin: )

A flush of the radiator and a cleaning of it to make sure that there aren't any dirt blocking the fins and therefore lowering the airflow are also things to look at.

The air flow can also be restricted if the car is lowered or if you have some cosmetic mods to the car.

Only thing i notice is once in a while my top hose is totally suctioned down.

I was working on my buddies car a few weeks back and notice his top hose was suctioned down too. After investigating the system, I found that the reservoir tank was caked with old dried coolant (looked like mud) which was plugging the reservoir hose. After flushing the whole system and cleaning out the reservoir tank & hose, the problem was fixed. Make sure nothing is blocking the reservoir hose and the tank is filled properly.

My wife's balls are delicious.

The gauge goes up during the 1/4 mile...? You got problems...

Yeah, there are bigger things at play here if it shoots up during a 1/4 mile.

I would look at the fans and water pump to start off with.

thanks everyone i'll check the reservoir, and flush out everything make sure its clean. the fan is new the mishimoto 12inch recently installed and the water pump is brand new not even 6 months old.

to make the situation even trickier if i gradually ease up to the higher speeds its no problem it wouldnt over heat. When i "mash out" as we say down there then the needle moves and only after a while and when i'm approaching 180-200

the headgaskets cant be the prob, i have no hard starting, my oil and coolant is clean, no bubbles in the reservoir. I believe everything is properly torqued down.

You keep referencing 180-200? I'm confused.

Also new water pumps and fans have been known to have issues.
