Anyone install a Citizen Band Radio? I'm thinking about installing this:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005N5WW/qid=1104025244/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/104-0298788-0269578?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846

most of the controls are on the mic. so I think I could install the small box under the center console or under one of the seats. The mic should be able to tuck away- under the seat or in the center cubby.

The radio contains the weather channels and I thougt that it might be fun on my weekend 100 mile runs to the coast.

Anyone done one of these yet?

I bought the same radio from the same vendor and am planning on having it installed in the same place...probably late this week. So, no, I haven't done it YET

Anyone know where to tap into a switched 12V source? I've got some time to think about it- I'm going to wait until it warms up to 45F

I installed my Passport using the positive wire for the cigarette lighter. You will need to remove the center console to get to it. Be sure to get a wire tapper instead of cutting the wire. It is way easier that way. It is switched to the ignition.

Here are some pics of inside the console. Hope they help.

It's the red wire that goes into the white plug next to the gearshifter:

Here is a pic. You can't see the wire though.

IMHO that is by far the worst CB Radio ever made. The speaker is awful. It has no power. A total waste of money for the road. Had one in my Jeep for about a week a couple of years ago.

thanks for the opinion! Sorry to hear that it didn't work well for you. Does anyone know of a good compact CB that works better?

I got a small 'sports' model from the Rat Shack and hacked the plug off and put on a cigarette lighter plug. It is yellow and looks like it is straight out of the 'My First Sony' catalog, but couldn't be beat for $45 invested with a mag-mount antenna. I got it for my Jeep to keep in contact off-roading, but haven't used it long-range. Great set-up if you don't want a permanent-type install.

Looks just like this, but the discontinued yellow 'sports' line:

Well I wouldn't necessarily give up on it. Reviews of it have been have been very good. Check them here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005N5WW/qid=1104203280/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/103-4954246-2155040?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846

Reviewers seem to have good things to say about it and so I am going to give it a try. Much of a radio's performance has to do with the antenna. Not sure what kind of antenna Limeydrive had. Glass mounts will render any radio virtually useless. Also, it is important to have the radio and antenna tuned with an swf meter for optimum performance.

I've had several radios and I'll have this installed within a few weeks. I was attracted to it because it can be hidden in the center console. If you are still wondering about performance, I should be able to let you know then.

Ran it through a 4' firestik. Fully tuned. Traded out to a Galaxy DX949 which is a great radio but much too big for an Outback (unfortunately). I guess everything is relative but my issues with the 75WXST were as follows.

- Very heavy mike. 2lbs - Not very practical

- Gets very hot.

- Poor scratchy speaker - If you use an external speaker you will find it acceptable

- No tone control.

- Very insensitive squelch control.

- Lousy range < 2 miles

But whatever floats your boat. I do a lot of travelling. A good CB has kept me amused on many a long trip and saved me from many speeding tickets.

On the other hand I do see why people would want to try it in the Legacy. It is probably one of the only ways to get a CB into the vehicle.

Oh yeah - it can be very entertaining to listen to others' conversations:D , it is helpful to always know where the next restroom is  , and it helps to know where the cops are sitting:p .

Oh, when there is an accident, the truckers can always tell you what lane you need to be in or whether you should try an alternate route.

Overall, a useful piece of electronics IMHO.

I didnt know people still used these in personal cars still.

I admit it. Guilty. I still use it. It was fun 15-20 years ago for me, still fun today. Besides, with the emergencies we've had the last few years in NYC, there's nothing more reliable (when cells, land lines, Internet, power, transportation, etc. go down). Take a long trip down south on I95 and there's nothing better. You'll still see hundreds of cars (let alone every single commercial truck) using CB.

I still use my awesome 10M Uniden President HR2510. I've got modified to go 11 meters (CB), juiced audio, pumped up the output wattage to about double on 10 and 11 meters AM. I an go FM and LSB/USB too! I can go everywhere between 26.000 and 30.000 mhz.

Old Skool. I'm never selling this thing.

I installed the Cobra WX75ST. It is small and compact, has weather channels and works well enough.

Here's a link on Amazon: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Cobra-75WXST-Weatherband-CB-Radio/dp/B00005N5WW/sr=8-12/qid=1161747224/ref=pd_bbs_sr_12/104-1345270-4639157?ie=UTF8&s=electronics]Amazon.com: Cobra 75WXST Weatherband CB Radio: Electronics[/ame]

I think its this one: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Cobra-HG-A1500-Gear-Antenna/dp/B00005N5X1/sr=8-2/qid=1161751506/ref=pd_bbs_2/104-1345270-4639157?ie=UTF8&s=electronics]Amazon.com: Cobra HG A1000 High Gear CB Antenna: Electronics[/ame]

Works OK, stays on the trunk deck. It will just fit through the opening between the trunk lid and the rear glass, so its easy to remove also.
