Recommended Posts

Where do you live, I'll do it for $450.00

BTW how much is the starter ?

With the TMIC removed it should be easy. The TMIC is easy to remove.

Check the on line auto parts stores for prices.

I'd have to say the Subaru starter looks like the easiest to replace of any car I've ever seen. It's practically presented to you on a silver platter, without having to even look under the car.

A reman starter from autozone online is $150 including core charge. It is super easy to replace, took me about an hour. All you have to do is take the TMIC off and it is accessible from under the hood on the drivers side of the engine. This is for a manual transmission. The starter for the automatic is $265 including core charge. I can't imagine replacing it would be much different than the manual transmission.

So dealer has it. They can't get it to start after a new stater was replaced. What else could be the reason? I get full dash board lights, and a clicking when trying to start. They said something about the circuit board. It been almost 8 days and I'm ready to tow it away from them.

Any ideas? Thanks for the help

Stormlight

If you turn on the lights and try to start do the lights dim?

One of my other cars(1988 Ford Bronco II) used to have problems starting on occasion. All electrical items would work but the starter. I would hear clicking from the relay but the starter wouldn't turn. The problem was a bad battery cable. This happened at least four times over the years I had this car. The first time it happened I replaced the starter, and spent about a week trying different things. Then my dad hands me one of those battery terminals that clamp on the end of the cable. I cut the OEM end off the cable, clamp the new terminal on and the car started first time. After the second time I started carrying a spare positive cable in the car at all times.

Filling out the profile on your car would help a bit.

If 5MT could be the clutch safety switch, disables the starter relay. Or the relay itself is bad.

funny how YOU have to come on here to find out why it won't start. another great service department at work it sounds.

mine was the clutch position switch. just died one day.

So since it wasn't your starter......are you going to have to pay for it? I mean if it didn't have to be replaced why should you have to pay for it? Subie specialist I had my car towed to knew it was the clutch position switch and not the starter......

I just had a very similar experience happen on my friends 2001 chevy cavalier. Full power we had replace the starter, alternator, tensioner pulley and battery still no start we were like WTF. Ended up being the AC compressor pulley had seized not allowing the motor to turn over.

My question to you is when trying to start the car does it act like it wants to turn over, but doesn't quite have enough power or umph as I'd like to say?

If the answer is yes I would check all of the pulley's to make sure one hasn't seized.

Ahh the joy of troubleshooting 'no start' in modern cars...

This could be a litany of issues...switches, sensors, wiring, keys, relays, etc. In the wrong mechanic's hands they will just start throwing parts at the problem, and that will turn what should be a $150 fix into a $1500 'fix' (no promises!).

Anyway, step one is to definitely get the car away from whoever recommended the starter replacement. If they're not capable of detecting a bad starter vs other problems then I wouldn't trust them to change my oil...or even my wiper blades.

Step 2, determine if you are willing to do some troubleshooting/diagnostic work to figure out where the issue is. If you're not, then its time to start researching nearby mechanics. If you ARE going to look over the car yourself, scour this and other forums for other vehicles that have exhibited similar problems and make a list. Process of elimination now. You can also Google something like "no start troubleshooting" and there are some pretty decent guides to teasing out the answer.

Step 3, Don't spend any significant amount of money on any parts until you are pretty certain you've identified the problem. As stated you can add an order of magnitude or more to the cost of repairs by throwing parts at a car (same thing basically goes for computers).

Finally, when asking questions here, be as detailed as you possibly can. Remember that all we know is what you tell us, and our advice is only as good as what we know.

$500 for a starter motor replacement is really excessive. Labor definitely shouldn't exceed $100 or so (2 hours max...)

Could also be a bad battery.

+1 on this... was having some issues with the car starting and I totally thought it was the starter. About 2 months later the battery (optima yellow top) just flat out died, wouldnt hold a charge or anything. Swapped out the battery and havent had the problem in over 4 months.

If I pass you on the right, I'm flipping you off.
