Whiteline 22mm Adjustable rear sway bar hitting axle

discojon

Recommended Posts

I was hearing some stange noises last week so I looked around under the car and saw that the rear swaybar was rubbing o the passenger side axle. The car has never been in a wreck and an alignment was just done which came out ok so I don't get the feeling that the car is bent. Plus the oem swaybar didn't do this. Its almost like the bar is 20mm or so too long. In the hardest setting the bar end is hitting the axle, in the softest setting the endlink will hit the axle. For the time being I have had to shim out the bushing / mount with flat washers to get adequate clearance. Any others seen this issue?

Whiteline is really a great company, we've been dealing with them since 1999 and have always had great customer service especially on issues like this.

Just installed my Whiteline rear swaybay and I have the exact same problem on the same side. I will be contacting Whiteline. Did the new swaybar work out OK?

Are you guys sure they aren't being installed improperly? We've seen this happen before where they were reversed and it puts the end links at that weird angle, etc.

You can see mine installed in the photo's above. Sends right to me. I have even replaced trailing arms, bushings, and all three links and that side is still located exactly the same and would run without the offset provided by the avo reinforcements.

Yeah I just tried installing my 20mm rear and the dimensions of the bar are wrong. It's interesting because mine also contacts on the passenger side as well. The driver side link is nearly vertical while the passenger side is probably 30° from vertical. I tried it on both settings - on soft the end link hit and on stiff the bar itself hit, even with the mounting bushings not fully tightened down. How frustrating...

Just curious, did all of your guys' bars come with the new "fade to black" bushings? I'm wondering if they changed suppliers of not only the bushings but also of the bars themselves...

You need to space out the bushing. Get 6 large fender washers and put them between the swaybar bushing mount and the bushing. You want two on each bolt and two in the middle to support the bushing. Does that make sense?

The new black greaseless bushings are the standard ones that WL is using now. Also if you got the bars in a box it means they came from their new manufacturing facility here in the US instead of from AUS.

Are the cars that these bars are going onto lowered? Which endlinks are you guys using?

Sti wagon specific pinks on bilstein HDS, WL adjustable endlinks, came in a box.

I shouldn't have to make modifications to accommodate a brand new part specifics to my vehicles application... I'm moderately lowered on bc coils. Mine came in a box and I'm using moog endlinks.

I've already sent an email to whiteline with a link to this thread. I also had my brand new black steering rack bushings split when torquing then to spec which I contacted them for initially. Disappointed to say the least...

The issue with WL rear bars on lowered cars only happens with the short Kartboy rear endlinks. That's why I asked it in conjunction with what endlinks were being used.

My OBXT is not modified at all in the suspension. I'm using AVO adjustable end links as suggested by Infamous Performance, where I purchased everything from. The end links have nothing to do with where the sway bar is in relationship to the axle. I can take the end link off and the sway bar is still hitting the axle. No amount of pulling or pushing is going to do anything about it. The sway bar as it is needs to move to the rear about 1/4 inch. There is only one way the sway bar will fit on the rear. It will not go in upside down or switched left to right. The pictures all correlate with images of the stock sway bar seen in the installation DIY.

Here is what I did and I think discojon did something similar with washers. I made a spacer out of a 1/4 inch thick steel bar. My thinking is that the bushing needs a flat surface on its back side (which is towards the front of the car). I drilled two holes so they line up with the bushing clamp. I then slipped the spacer between the bushing and the mount, and put the clamp back on. Now nothing is touching.

My disclaimer is that I have no idea how this will affect the performance of the sway bar or the car. I drove it around and it seem fine but I was not very aggressive. I've already notified Whiteline of this situatation and also their sway bar tore up one of my end links. I keep you up to date how they handle this.

I did the same as Vanman just used washers cause I was lazy. Took the washers off when I installed the avo reinforcements since they space the swaybar back far enough. The passenger side of the swaybar is about 20mm longer than the driver from ear to bend.
