babybaluga32
Let's imagine this isn't a wrx for a moment as it doesn't really matter.. I think it happened the last mile or less of driving otherwise it would be toast. The car was purchased yesterday. I was taking the engine out to do the clutch and decided to pull the TB cover... I want to get a new TB and the everything to go with it, but i'm not sure the person who bought it want's to shell out another 280$ for the kit. The belt is a little worn, not too bad. Can I get away with just getting the idler. (((((SO STUPID)))))) If it was my car I would never risk it, plus it's rightttttttt there!!. The current belt supposedly has about 56k on it. The whole belt is ridiculously loose. I can't imagine it's from that idler. http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg500/atomicrider4/IMG_20141007_181925_zpswue8pwzo.jpg http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg500/atomicrider4/IMG_20141007_181854_zpsgmzczjts.jpg
Stang70Fastback
Remove the idler and you should be fine. It's clearly getting in the way of the belt. You can tell they are rubbing because of the rubber shavings.
babybaluga32
I assume the tensioner is bad too. This is wayyy to lose isn't it? It moves a lot with little pressure. I'm surprised it didn't skip! http://youtu.be/_C2iF_V8ZyE
johnegg
ok, the belt has 56k miles on it, but how many miles are on the tensioner and the idler???? do the minimum and he will have a great boat anchor in 6 months. do it right and he will drive happily for miles. did the timing jump? babybaluga32
I hadn't thought about someone only doing the belt, but I suppose it happens. I talked her into buying a gates kit, so it should be good to go. As far as I'm aware it did not skip timing. It ran fine when I parked it. keenster
I would just get the gates racing kit that comes with belt, pump, pulley, and bearings. Your Subie will be a much happier car. It's cheaper than a rebuild
keenster
Plus it's a Kevlar belt that come with the kit! Better than the stock belt by far!
blankdeluxe
People do only belts all the time. I have seen a ton of motors that had 200k on pulleys and brand new belts on them. If you ask me and anytime I ever do belts for anyone I always make them get the whole kit. I won't install a new belt on old pulleys to save $100 and ruin a motor. johnegg
true, but usually it is not the belt that fails. usually it is an idler that fails. usually the toothed idler, or the 98+ tensioner. i do not remember seeing a failed belt with everything else good. but regardless, a complete kit is a must.
