Original start to thread below:

There's always something going on at AVO. There is a lot of small projects ongoing at any time, and then there are some large ongoing projects. This is the start of one of the larger ones.

http://www.avoturboworld.com/images/stories/2010/avo_outback/2010_06/outback_02.jpg

What we have here is one 2007 Subaru Outback 2.5i with 5MT. It's got... a bit of mileage (182,000 miles!). It feels about as loose as a 48 year old Dallas cheerleader. Definitely been well broken in. But otherwise in good mechanical condition, with a few scrapes here and there and in dire need of a refresh.

http://www.avoturboworld.com/images/stories/2010/avo_outback/2010_06/outback_01.jpg

So that's where we are going to start. New oil, new filters, and whatever else we will need to do to get this feeling nice a new.

Then it's on to tightening it up, replacing all the worn out bushings and suspension bits so that it feels better than new. Sort of like said cheerleader after 4 months at some expensive plastic surgeons.Getting the handling up to par isn't the only reason we are going to be doing this. This is all because of our end of project goal: Project 2.5i Turbo.*

That's right, this will be the base car for our turbocharger kit for all of the newer 2.5i turbo kits. Why this Outback? It's not just because it'll be fun as hell to get a fast sleeper like this going, but because this is basically one of the most common Subaru's on the road.*

And, boy, after driving this around for a bit, it needs more power. While this isn't probably the most powerful example available, it's not the worst either. It is also going to be a good test of what putting our turbo kit on to a high mileage engine will be like.

So keep an eye on this space, I'll fill you all in as I go.

Oh Shinngity  I knew you all were looking for a 2.5i but never thought you would get a 2.5i OB in black it is very sexy ;) and you are right it probably outnumbers Legacy 2.5i 3 to 1, all i can say is Boost IT!

Phew - spent the morning changing the sludge...I mean, oil, that was in it. Though I'm semi-serious on sludge, I swear there was clumps of dirt inside the super high performance Motor Trend oil filter. Valvoline oil and Fram oil filter in it for now. I'll probably run that for only 1-2k and then run some new oil and filter again.

I have to get used to the different noises out of the 2.5i's. I'm not afraid to admit I've only owned turbo models, and when I was driving NA models, it was for the magazine writer phase of life, so I was caning the living crap out of them. Uh, I mean, doing reasonable performance testing on mountain roads.

The car is looking, and feeling, a lot better than when I picked it up from the mad russian. I have to say, he'd have gotten about another grand out of the car if he had simply been bothered to clean it up and do some maintenance.

LOL poor OB well at least the new oil will collect more sludge and clean it out a bit. Turbo only you say? With the old EJ253 you gott keep her above 2800 RPM for any type of excitement and preferably above 4K :)

re: Oil filters - what I've got on right now is merely an interim gatherer of old sludge, so I'm not too worried about it. I'll probably change the oil in 1-2k at most. Whoever owned the car before me probably was using about a billion different oil additives in hopes of keeping the engine together (and so they wouldn't have to be changing the oil every other week given their mileage...).

I'll be test fitting our Power Air Intake from the Legacy GT tomorrow - I've already determined that the 2.5i (at least my '07) is using exactly the same MAF holder design as the turbo models. So I'll take the airbox out temporarily and do some fitment tests. This is just for photos, I'll be putting the stock airbox back in afterwards.

That's because I'll be getting some goodies in the mail soon, and be using them to do some baseline runs of the car. This is to check against as I start putting parts on and tuning. We'll be doing NA stages first, the turbo kit will be the final project.

Yeah I'm not saying they're death traps but they are certainly built with inferior parts. For the money you can buy better built filters. With a boosted car that gets beat on and subaru having a higher than normal OCI, it wouldnt be ideal.

Yeah I use Purolator as that is what Subaru sells........therefore obviously backs it.

I only tried it for a short bit, then went back to the stock airbox. Reason being, once I have the equipment on hand, I want to do some baseline runs at stock, then log runs with the air intake on. That'll give me some hard facts to work with, and not just the buttometer.

Welp, the Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 Rev E cable came in today, so I'll be able to start some logging.

I've also been putting together some of the minor stuff that's going to be going on the car:

Missing from that are the 5MT transmission mount bushings, short shifter, and a few more parts here and there. But it's a start!
