Trying to change compressor belt

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to replace a worn AC belt, but I'm not sure how to take the tention off of the belt to remove it. It looks like the lower pulley is moved by the tentioner, but I can't get to the bolt to loosen the pulley because the fan is in the way. Can anyone help me out?

Its a 97 Legacy L with the 2.2l

No its not. Turn left to loosen it

Yes you turn CCW to loosen cause it threads the pulley up the bolt. Its reverse threads cause I just had mine off and painted it.

I'll try again today, I wanted to be sure I was looking at the right bolt before I ripped something up. It's a narrow channel that the bolt slides in and my wrench doesn't have enough room on one side to seat in, but I'm sure if I work at it I can figure something out. Thanks!

there are 2 lock nuts just under the top of the bracket. if they are tight it will be much harder.

and it is a reverse thread so to loosen the lock nuts you have to turn them clockwise.

but to loosen the belt, turn the long bolt counter-clockwise.
