Looking into joining the legacy game.

Recommended Posts

Hey I just made this account and I am really loving these cars. I am looking at a 2005 Black legacy GT. I am going to get an automatic because I can't be bothered to deal with shifting all of the time. Although it won't be manual I still want to mod this car. Anyways the car has 130,000 miles on it, and they are asking 5,650 but I can probably talk it down. The body is absolutely clean and it's a good looking car. I'm just wondering, what kind of condition would the engine, and trans be in? Along with how might the turbo be? Let me know what you guys think.

the engine could run another 100k or could blow tomorrow. Has a lot to do with how its been maintained.

I'd definitely get a compression and leakdown test before springing for that.

The price is also really low, check for a previously blown turbo, they like to take the rest of the motors with them.

Most of all, do some searching around the 4th gen forum. This same issue gets posted about every two weeks and you can save us a lot of typing by doing a little typing in google.

5600 is pretty low. Expect to have to do the timing belt, and it probably has low compression and the turbo is gone or has a lot of shaft play. Then again, maybe they jsut want to get rid of it. reading hte stickies here and in the techincal sections will help you figure out what to do.

if you are mechanically inclined you'll be much better off. Rebuilding gets expensive.

That's definitely a low price. Even for only fair condition KBB puts it a thousand higher than that. Hell, I just paid more than twice that for an '06 with almost that mileage a few months ago.

Nrw, my car lost almost $1500 of value at the beginning of the year (also had 10,000 more miles). The price also depends on your region. In the Pacific Northwest, we sell these for an arm and a leg because they have such a good reputation.

Still, $5600 is pretty low so having a prepurchase inspection done is gonna be your best and safest bet.

That's crazy. You could replace the shortblock and go stage 3 and still come out ahead of what I paid for mine.

Get a compression and leakdown test. Maybe look for a subaru specialist in your area and have him look it over then flog it for a while. It's pretty easy to check the common problem areas in these cars.

$5600? Either there is a huge repair bill they don't want to fix or they don't know the cars actual value. So your either a lucky person and just got a steal or just got the biggest headache.

The car should really be at least 7.5k on the low end if its in good condition with 130k

If the compresson test is good, and the turbo has been replaced, be careful of metal in the oil. The oil cooler can hold metal particles and release them at a future time.

If the turbo has not been replaced then that's a great price. Buy it and replace the turbo and remove the banjo filters.

Do a few quick oil changes and get the car tuned ?

Oh yea do you have extra money laying around....if the engine is bad, look at $6000 for have it replaced.

Could be a great car, could be a lemon...know what your buying, or have money saved to fix it.

That order may very but that's the main ideas.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.
