Bosal/SPT catback is NOT a quality build

It pains me to post this thread, but I am compelled to express my shock and amazement at the poor craftsmanship of the "new" Bosal/SPT catback exhaust. At first glance upon unpackaging it, the evidence of cheap construction and cheap material & design choice were apparent and obvious.

The flanges appear to be steel - not stainless steel. There were clear signs of rusting on them. The mid-pipe to Y-pipe flange joint was a joke. Two steel stud bolts tack welded into the flange like your grandfather might fix his 30-yr old tractor. All of the welds had the workmanship of a drunk retarded kid learning how to weld. Uneven, spotty, bulging in places, fat, narrow, you name it.

Sorry that I didn't take pics of the crappy flanges first but we were pressed for time to get the install done. So my buddy Jose pulled out some silver hi-temp spray paint and we masked and painted all flanged to try and minimize longterm rusting/staining.

Everywhere you looked carefully you found more signs of cheap-ass design and construction. Even the mid-pipe had a mickey mouse feature. Instead of fitting the DP to Mid-pipe flange directly onto the raw stainless 3" pipe they welded a 1" long piece of what looks like plain steel tubing thats about 10% smaller in dia that had the flange welded onto it. Just butt ugly and completely uncalled for.

When we got everything installed and started it up, one can was whistling. Found an exhaust gas leak spitting out about 2" along the perimeter of the passenger side can. Shit! Hell, the cans themselves are fabricated like a homemade exhaust. Flat sheet stock rolled with flat sheet stock end caps just folded or swaged around the lip. Frankly its a joke of a design.

Sure all the parts are super-duper shiny and buff polished from the Y-pipe back. Who gives a shit! I wasn't looking to buy a ricer setup. Shiny isn't enough. I can't believe that SOA gave approval of this exhaust. And I certainly cant comprehend why it took them well over a year to go from car show display to production. Hell, it looks like they didnt even invest in any tooling or dies.

I know everyone is going to want to see pics of what I'm ranting & raging about. Well, I didnt take a bunch of the crappy details up close. I'll try to get a few pics of what I'm talking about later today.

In terms of exhaust sound - it is virtually stock quiet. Its night & day difference from the Greddy EVO2 exhaust that I took off. Its also night & day different than the quality, material of construction, and workmanship of the Greddy CBE also.

Next step, contact the vendor and ask them to send me a replacement rightside can to stop the whistling.

the most unacceptable part IMO is the price (MSRP $849) especially for "quality" or lack thereof. thats why im waiting for Cobb :D

sorry about your troubles. that is just plain ridiculous

I have to agree 100% with K here. I couldn't believe the lack of quality myself. Even in the polished cans, there was rusting already visible. Really low quality. The metal used on the cans was also quite thin especially when compared to the Greddy.

The sound was quite decent. But one can had a leak in the perimeter, which made a whistling sound, the other made a similar whistling sound but from the tip. Poor, poor craftsmanship. I was also quite dissapointed.

When looking at the exhaust as a whole, it looks like an exhaust that you wouldn't mind purchasing for say... 500-600, but not for the 8xx they want for it. Simply unacceptable.

Any chance it's a China special ie: counterfeit ??

I doubt it. You typically find that in products that sell in quantities... Why make a knockoff of an exhaust you will only sell 5 of when you can make a knock of one that will sell hundreds...

I tend to agree with most of the comments, however, I found the welds to be very industrial looking. As opposed to pretty tig welded ones on other's. I don't think this effects durability one bit, but cosmetic only. I would have liked the flanges to have been SS as well, but oh well.

I picked this up with Subaru bucks, plus a discount, so it made the price vry attractive! If I were to have to pay full retail, I would have passed or waited to see what the production changes are going to be.

I'm saying this while waiting for a warranty exchange on my left can that had loose packing in it from the get go...

I also had the same conclusions when I opened up the SPT/Bosal exhaust. My setup was returned to Subaru a couple weeks ago, as the tip on the passenger-side muffler had several dents on it. The tips were wrapped up well and there was no damage to the box, so it looks like it actually left the manufacturer that way (quality control anyone?).

I am still waiting on my replacement exhaust from Dave at MSPT, as he is waiting on word that Subaru verified the delivery (Subaru should have received it sometime last week). I really hope the new one he sends me will be better (Dave said he would inspect it before shipping)... I wasn't going to say anything until I got my replacement, but this thread came up. :p

here are some pics that I just took from underneath the car. please remember that the "pretty" silver flanges are that way because we painted them first. they were raw & rusted before that. notice the spotty welds. see if you can spot the rust pockets?

the sound is very muted, at least coming from the Greddy EVO2 soundtrack.

the car is much quieter inside. I forgot what its like to listen the radio with the volume knob below 10 :icon_tong

Sorry about the exhaust, I know that sucks. Thanks for the headsup on the crappy quality though! Looking at your pics, it seems that the cans aren't even centenered at the rear slots. Maybe they will start to care about their quality when they get overstocked with non-selling exhausts.
