Timing belt idler bearings blew out..

Let's imagine this isn't a wrx for a moment as it doesn't really matter..

 

I think it happened the last mile or less of driving otherwise it would be toast. The car was purchased yesterday. I was taking the engine out to do the clutch and decided to pull the TB cover...

I want to get a new TB and the everything to go with it, but i'm not sure the person who bought it want's to shell out another 280$ for the kit. The belt is a little worn, not too bad. Can I get away with just getting the idler. (((((SO STUPID)))))) If it was my car I would never risk it, plus it's rightttttttt there!!. The current belt supposedly has about 56k on it.

 

The whole belt is ridiculously loose. I can't imagine it's from that idler.

ok, the belt has 56k miles on it,

but how many miles are on the tensioner and the idler????

 

do the minimum and he will have a great boat anchor in 6 months.

do it right and he will drive happily for miles.

 

did the timing jump?

People do only belts all the time. I have seen a ton of motors that had 200k on pulleys and brand new belts on them. If you ask me and anytime I ever do belts for anyone I always make them get the whole kit. I won't install a new belt on old pulleys to save $100 and ruin a motor.

true, but usually it is not the belt that fails.

usually it is an idler that fails.

usually the toothed idler, or the 98+ tensioner.

i do not remember seeing a failed belt with everything else good.

 

but regardless, a complete kit is a must.
