yes, they are coming. we've loosely heard a target of 2010, but nothing official. should hear more on this in a year from now.

legacy and outback get full re-designs in 09 as 2010 MYs. it's possible that they may not longer share the same platform.

a lot can happen in 3 years...i would think the impreza/forester would be first with the diesel to compete w/ rabbit/golf/jetta. but, now that honda is going accord diesel. ??

I would like to see more diesels available, although a 4 cylinder diesel doesn't do much for me. Now a H6 turbo diesel making around 250-270hp and 400+lb-ft would kick ass and could still get high 30's low 40's on the highway (all the driving I do anymore).

I am just waiting for a turbo diesel to make it into a 1/2 ton truck.

I drove my first diesel two weeks ago. It was a 24 foot Box truck powered by a GMC Duramax engine. It certianly didn't move very fast from a stand still, but push that pedal down while rolling and it had some thrust to it. 300 miles, avg. 9.5 MPG. :)

Considering it was more than likely bone stock and stuck in a big old box truck 9.5 MPG isn't too bad.

When I moved to South Dakota land we used about a 15 foot (I think) box truck powered by a 6.0L GM gasser. It got a whopping 6.5 MPG, and couldn't get out of it's own way.

Yeah, we wondering what would have happened if it weren't a diesel.

Would you be willing to pay an extra $2,000 for a diesel-powered minivan?” asked Ralph Gilles, Chrysler's vice president of design.

Chrysler could consider subsidizing the cost of the diesel power train for the first couple years for the purpose of establishing its diesel reputation and to help seed the market for the cars. Giving away cars for less than it costs to build them sounds like a recipe for failure, but Toyota used this strategy quite effectively to bootstrap the hybrid market.

On a 24 foot box truck with a gasser you would have had the pleasure of: getting less than 6 MPG, overtaxing the cooling system (in summer conditions), and having very questionable on road performance. It could have made for a really really lousy trip (well if anything can be worse than driving a damn loaded box truck).

toyota did that already in the 80s, they are really rare though

Yet Toyota seems to be last in line to do it again.

GM is introducing a 4.5L V8 turbo diesel for '09 in the 1/2 tons. Dodge has a 5.6L V8 Cummins lined up for '09 1/2 tons. Ford is developing a 4.4L V8 diesel for the F-150, also for '09. Even Nissan is working on a diesel for the Titan, sourcing the engine form International (manufacturer of the Ford Powerstroke diesel that is a POS).

Toyota never a leader, always a follower it seems.

The one tech they lead in is the one that is the most worthless to me: hybrids.

BMW 2 liter diesel makes 161 hp and 251 lb-ft (340Nm) (120d and 320d).

It seems that just introduced BMW 123d is also 2 liter diesel.

It makes 204 hp and 295lb-ft.
