MSD Coil Into a Subaru step by step photos

Recommended Posts

Use MSD coil #8239. It is for Mitsubishi/Dodge. I did this without having a donor harness from the Mitsubishi/Dodge.

---photo1 is the view of the coils plug. Center pin is switched 12V+, Outer pins are negative triggers.

---photo2 shows a .110 fully insulated female connector. (same as a negative speaker connector)

---photo3 shows my homemade harness plugged into the coil.

---photo4 shows after I insulated it from the elements using Permatex black silicone adhesive sealant.

---photo5 shows the coil mounted on an aluminum plate 1/4" X 3 1/2" X 4". Only 2 holes line up with the Subaru's factory coil mounts. The top 2 bolts go through the aluminum plate, into the factory mounting holes. The bottom 2 bolts go into the aluminum plate only, into threads I tapped into it.

---photo6 is the hardware needed.

---photo7 shows the factory harness and my homemade harness attached to each other. I used .250 fully insulated male and female connectors.

---photo8 is the harness all taped up.

---photo9 shows the difference between my 96 Legacy's coil boots and the type needed to fit the MSD. This NGK set for a 99 Legacy is the style required.

---photo10 Finished.

Mine only had one mounting point that would work on my 2.2; I made it work with a lock washer and the right bolt, but I was kind of disappointed about how nothing lined up. I'm going to be making an aluminum plate to mount it up soon.

I think the small differences between a phase 1 and phase 2 ej22 made the differences; I also was able to reuse my spark plug wires for the coil pack.

Yummyntummy, the difference isn't like ZOMG VTEC JUST KICKED IN, but it's a somewhat noticeable improvement in areas. Power is delivered more linearly, it feels like I have a better throttle response, and the idle and exhaust sound different. Once I fill up I'll let you know how winter MPGs have changed, because that's the thing I kept on hearing about this mod is that you'll return a couple MPGs.

The first thing I noticed was the transmission shifting a little sooner than usual. The plug wires I had to replace due to different coil boot styles were only a few months old, so I don't think it was them. It is too soon to tell a change in MPGs. I will post any change.

Other than drilling and tapping threads into the holes, I did not actually make my aluminum plate. I ordered it pre-cut through Speedy Metals. http://www.speedymetals.com/

Gas mileage went from 250 per tank to 200 per tank. I am attributing this change to going from 185/70/14 maypops to new 205/55/16 Pilot Sport A/S+. The cold temps don't help either. My mileage is messing with my serenity. Now I've decided to urinate away more money on a new upstream O2 sensor just because it's ancient. This is one of those rare times when I'm hoping something requires replacment.

The winter temps, gas, and all those little winter factors will destroy mileage...but you still shouldn't be getting 250 miles per tank. I can get usually 350-400 out of mine, and that was before the coil pack. Not sure how she's doing in the winter (I haven't been home), but that's a little on the low side for a 2.2

It's not 250... it's 200 now. Tried this afternoon to replace my O2 sensor, GD thing won't budge. I hope the Seafoam Deep Creep spray I put on it doesn't completley destroy it electroniclly, giving me a CEL and poor driveability.

Right, but even then 250 is on the low side for the 2.2. Try getting that O2 sensor out of there and replacing it...it's a good start. Then just go through the basics: filters, MAF, vacuum lines, plugs, etc.
