2008 Vacation Pix

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I broke down and paid SOA $34.95 for a 72-hour subscription so I could download the factory service manuals for my 2008 OB XT...

What a PITA! SOA sends them bit-by-bit, usually one page at a time (though mercifully, sometimes 100+ pages at a time). They also come with incomprehensible titles, so I went through and re-titled them all (information without organization is useless).

I've now got all sections, except the 2.5 NA and 3.0 engines (I've got a 2.5 turbo) and the body repair section.

Glancing through them, there doesn't seem to be MUCH different from the the 2007 Legacy "vacation pix" that are already available here (do a search), though obviously the front grill and bumper are TOTALLY different (the bumper must come off to remove the grill).

In any case, if anybody would like to see my 2008 "vacation pix," I'd be happy to e-mail them around.

If you give something away when you do not own the copyrights on it, and

you do not have express permission from the copyright holder, you are guilty

of copyright infringement.

To be legal anyone getting a copy of the Subaru created maintenance manual

in either printed or electronic form should pay Subaru their $35 download fee.

The printed form of the complete 2008 Subaru Legacy/Outback Service manual

is priced at over $600, but for $35 you get 72 hours of download time. It is a

pain to download since you must get each section file one at a time and there

are *lots* of files (about 1260, not counting the updates). There is also a 50

file per hour download speed limit and the files have alphanumeric names that

do not state the file contents. Also be aware of the more than one hundred

manual update files that you must separately get, and the late model Service

Bulletins that may interest you.

After downloading the files I created a directory structure with HTML pages

so that the entire set of electronic manuals could be accessed just like the

printed version by simply pointing and clicking with a mouse (or trackball).

This takes *many* hours of additional effort, so be prepared.

Right. It wasn't paying the $35 that torqued me, it's that Subaru has made such a mess of what should be a well-organized thing.

Sending this over e-mail is a PITA, too... it's the same 1200+ files. Somebody's working on putting the whole thing into one gigantic searchable download-able pdf. In the meantime, I'm happy enough to send anybody any specific vacation pix that they want/need, but sending everything is too big a PITA.
