NewBlueSubaru
I want to install a backup camera on my 2013. I am looking at getting these items, but I have a lot of questions. Camera: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Fitting-Back-Up-Camera-Vision-Function/dp/B00MFG07GO/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1421779715&sr=8-10&keywords=subaru+legacy+back+up+camera]Amazon.com : Car Fitting Back-Up Camera 170° With Night Vision Function Fit For Subaru Legacy : Car Electronics[/ame] Transmitter: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E4HMYZO/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=]Amazon.com : Onedayshop® 2.4g Wireless Color Video Transmitter and Receiver for the Vehicle Backup Camera/front Car Camera : Camera And Photography Products : Camera & Photo[/ame] Monitor: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JTRGQ0I/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=]Amazon.com: E-best® 4.3" Foldable TFT Color LCD Car Reverse Rearview Monitor Screen;16:9 4.3inch Foldable Vehicle TFT Color LCD Screen Display Rearview Monitor for Parking Camera VCR DVD VCD: Electronics[/ame] I’m not sure how the camera connects to the license plate light for power. I have seen other cameras on Ebay that say you can do this. Is it necessary to connect the camera to the tail light wire and do you need to splice into it? Which wire is the right one? If you don’t connect it, will the camera always be on? How do I power the wireless receiver with the camera? At the other end with the display, how do I power the receiver and the display? I also assume that I would need to feed the wires through the conduit into the trunk, which doesn’t look like it should be too hard to do since I found out how to remove the clips on the trunk inside lid covering, they are type B (http://www.m-sedan.com/removing_and_reinstalling_clips-6899.html). The replies may help other people wanting to do the same thing, but don't know how. There is also the Garmin Nuvi 2798 with a backup camera, but you need to drill into the car according the manual because even if I go through license plate light, the wires would be exposed and there would be an opening. I would also need to splice into the tail light wires for power, so that is a no go. Also this would lock me into using the 2798. I am waiting for the new 2789 to come out in April. 06leg315
I just installed a pioneer avhx4600bt head unit and put a camera in wired. For power you tap into the reverse light. Two wires power and ground. That way when u put it in reverse the camera gets power. Mine didn't attach to the plate it, I attached it in between the plate lights up under neath so its kinda hidden. I had to drill a hole forthe wire then i put an epoxy filler over it then the camera so its water tight again. For up front tyou can get power from anything really. Just find a 12 v source and run the power and ground. Or if you don't mind taking up a cigarette lighter you can buy a male lighter piece attach the two wires and plug it in. NewBlueSubaru
Thanks for the info, the camera I was looking at fit in where the license plate light is so you didn't need to drill into the car. What do you mean by tapping into the reverse light? Is there a way to do it without cutting anything? Did you have a wireless receiver powered as well? The instructions on seller's product pages are always vague.
apexi
For my camera I tapped into the reverse lights with a vampire tap for both power and signal. So the camera gets power from the reverse light power wire, and that also tells the camera when to turn on. I tapped my unused homelink mirror power connector where the map lights are for the video display power. With these things, installation instructions will vary car by car unfortunately. NewBlueSubaru
Where do I get this vampire connector? You can use it without cutting the wire?
apexi
Most auto parts stores and home depot/lowes type stores should have them, maybe walmart too. I guess more common name for them might be quick connects or scotch locks instead of vampire taps.. I used ones that are for 18ga-22ga wire. The video below offers a good explanation on how they work, and the video calls them snap locks, so these things have lots of different names I've discovered. NewBlueSubaru
It still cuts into the wire. I'm not sure which is the right wire.
apexi
On my 2009, I tapped into the black and red wire going to the reverse light bulb for both the backup camera's power and reverse signal. I used solid red speaker wire as an extension from the cameras factory wiring, to the scotch lock/vampire tap. To power the display in the car, I used the homelink mirror connector which wasn't being used. On my car, I used the yellow and blue wire to power the display, with the solid red speaker wire as an extension again.
