05 LGT wont start

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody. Long time lurker. So I bought this 05 LGT back in Feb. Previous owner tried to pull a insurance scam buster the glass and what not out. I was told the engine was blown up when I got it. But luckily for me it wasn't.

Im at a loss now. Ive searched and looked through wiring diagrams and I can't find anything helpful.

When the you crank the engine the starter engages for about 1 complete crank revolution and cuts. Then a two to three second pause it will crank again and pause. Also the radiator and condenser fans will cycle on and off and the a/c comp field coil will energize in acc II (not sure if it is related or not). Today I swapped what I believe is the starter relay under the driver dash next to the fuse box. Kept pulling relays until it wouldn't crank and changed that one out.

I have found two different starting system diagrams. One shows the system with a security cut relay on the control side of the starter relay. They other has no security relay. Not sure which one is applicable for my car.

Now I have used my powerlines and just jumped the starter myself and it will crank fine. So ive eliminated the starter as the issue. There is no aftermarket security system or accessory installed anywhere I can tell On the car. I also have new keys that havnt been programmed yet using any of those the car wont crank at all.

Anybody have advice or insight. That would be awsome.

No mil. Just rescinded and it fine. Car sat for about a year in a impound comp was 170high 160low. It was semi rough but got all new glass in tail lamps ordered. Body wise its solid. I paid 450 for the car and have about 1300 in it with parts.

I'd say you're ahead money wise at this point but.... The quick crank of the starter sounds like what I have; it may have to do with the immobilizer. Unfortunately you may need to have a dealer read the codes for you (bummer that you can't drive it there). A parts store OBD II reader can't do it.

The key's need to be programmed to/with the car. The key's have a chip that must match the car.

wow $450 for working engine and some busted glass, the Subaru gods must like you!

Is the passenger front wheel missing the brake caliper?

Yea. Thats what ive been thinking is It may end up going to the dealer once im finished with what I can do. All the caliper are off. Coworker is powdercoating them for me since they were bright awful yellow. And im rebuilding all 4. One was seized.

Hopefully I can have it up at the dealer in a week or two.

fans cycling on and off usually means its in diagnostic mode!

Make sure the green connectors above the passengers feet Left side behind the carpet, are "not" connected.

Did you try getting any dtc codes? Is there a check engine light? If you don't want to use dashboard dtc you can buy a 10 dollar vag com cable of ebay/amazon, use a laptop(windows os) and connect to obd port to log/read/clear ecu.

I usually like to have an idea of the problem before the stealership trys to buttfuck you.

Its a 05, stay away from the dealer, find a good local repair shop, ask the guy's at the auto parts stores who they let work on there cars.

Check out the local forums may be some help there with a repair shop.

Also forgot the shift interlock dose not work. Brake lights are good but can't shift from park.

This is normal. When I bought my LGT it was in a garage with a dead bettery and it wouldn't shift out of park. The Nissan Rogue rental that I was driving at the time wouldn't shift out of Park with the engine not running either.

Well got it look at tonight. With my jump pack which i guess is going bad it wouldn't crank. Hooked his truck up solid continuous crank. Car started after about 20 second or crank. Ran rough for a min or so and progressively started to run smoother. So victory. Now just got to finish rebuilding the calipers and coat them. Do my t belt this weekend and start test driving.
