"Mach 2" synthetic oil...WTF?

Recommended Posts

I went to the Subie dealer the other day and he pushed a pamphlet in my face as I was leaving regarding a new synthetic oil they are offering touting it's $69 price. He told me that if I maintained my oil changes with this oil on schedule they would warranty my engine for $4000 if you start using the product prior to 40K or $2000 after 40K. Course it's for internal engine components (not turbo dammit).

They also offer $75 "roadside assistance".

He said it was an Amsoil product, but they literally have NO information about the oil itself, no real website and no links to product specifications and testing and no terms and conditions.... I'm familiar with Amsoil, but saying it's an "Amsoil product" means nothing.

I told the guy I would never use an oil I know nothing about....

Anyone ever hear of "Mach 2" synthetic?

Was it $69/quart(liter) or for a full change? If it's for a full change it may be acceptable, but if it's per quart it's just a snake oil sell.

Purchasing oil here is not cheap: $100 for 4 liters... :(

I'll stop you right there and you seem to already know what is going on.

FYI - valvoline will warranty your engine and all you have to do is use their oil and report your oil changes to their website. Their oil is way less than $65 /liter, /quart, /change, /BJ. Their warranty isn't a $4000 ad on either.

edit: Amsoil doesn't have a Mach anything in their product lineup... at least not on their main page.

Sounds like a great deal!

Think of all the weight you'll save too! That'll lower your CG!

My guess is that Amsoil re-brands this stuff and sells it though a retail consulting organization as a value add to customers to generate repeat business. Break even on an oil change (at worst) but get customers coming back to sell them other services. The warranty is just a way to keep people changing their oil on time. All and all I wouldn't care as I do my oil changes on time, but I'm not going to use an oil, with a super spiffy name, just because they offer a little engine coverage. Especially as they are covering parts of the engine that so rarely break when regular oil changes are performed. Now, cover the turbo.....

Subaru is finally embracing synthetic oil. Yes finally, after all these years of harping on us owners about the perceived danger of not using their recommended dino juice. This link was part of an email sent on behalf of my local dealer.

hmm, seems like it's quite popular with the rotary and rx7 people...

Yea, but their engines actually consume oil by design. They probably like it as much as a fuel additive, as they do a lubricating oil.
