Stock Spec.B Bilsteins vs. Bilstein HD's

TJS

Recommended Posts

I've got a blown left front bilstein on my 07 Spec.B. Just curious if anybody has any experience with the Bilstein HD's and how they compare to the stock Bilsteins? I really like the ride and don't really want to change it, but at the same time I can get all 4 HD's for the same price as a pair of the OEM Bilstein fronts.

The HDs are simply a different valving than the Spec B ones. If you are coming from a price point then the HDs are definitely cheaper than any OEM parts. I would replace the whole set either way as when 1 goes the rest might be on their way out.

Sarasube,

A strut dampens movement. It prevents your car from being 3000 pounds of mass sitting on steel springs and and having to absorb the momentum caused by slamming that mass into a bump in the road at 75mph.

I'm no suspension expert, but a blown strut no longer absorbs dampens movement. This can be observed a few ways:

1. Ride quality goes down

2. Your car bounces alot. This can sometimes (but not always) be simulated by pressing down on your car's trunk and watching it bounce a few times - indiciating the strut isn't dampening the movement.

...

For myself, at 77k on the car, I notice that even modestly rough streets feel like "crashing". It feels like it's relying on the springs more to control movement. So mine aren't "blown" necessarily, but they are pretty much at the end of their life.

Different how?

Different in that they arent the same:). The range or dampening or both are different. My guess is oem ones are softer than the HDs.

Hmm,

In that case I need the HD's. My pinks overtake the SPEC-B Bilsteins and I need more dampening. Are the Koni's stiffer then the SPEC-B's or the HD's?

Koni's are rebound ajustable.

I'm wondering how hey are from the comfy setting. I heard they are stiffer then the USDM SPEC-B rev c Bilstein at the softest setting?

Mike, you guys install a lot of them, no?

Yup we've installed probably 100+ sets of konis in the past 10 years. Specifically on LGTs probably 30 sets.

I ran them on my 05 LGT Wagon with STi Pinks. I could take my 75 year old Mother In Law through NYC in it when on Soft. On Stiffest I took the car to Watkins Glen, Pocono and NJMP road courses and kept up with the best of them. So my take is the soft setting is a great OEM-Like replacement setting, turn it up a bit and it just gets better.

Also,

On the Bilstein rebuilds. You can give them your spring rate and they will match the valving of the damper to the springs you are using! Decisions, decisions...

Right but then you can't change em to suit your driving style (MIL v. Track) also Konis have a lifetime warranty.

I hear you. I personally like the spring to be well matched to the damper at all times since running adjustables underdampened on a stiff spring can be a miserable experience during "emergency maneuvers". I've never been one for adjustable shocks but at the price I'm really tempted to give the Koni's a try. I'm debating between rebuilding my extra set of Bilsteins, RCE V1 KW's that I have sitting around, or buying the Koni's.

To the OP, sorry for the thread hijack.

I hear yah. I dont believe in coilovers on street cars, way more dangerous in emergency situations than springs/struts. Also i am not that good a driver (despite 10 years as an instructor ontrack) where i need my equipment to be perfectly matched. Same goes for power upgrades. I am pretty much of the school where minor mods coupled with education are the best setups.

I can't speak from the overdampened perspective since I haven't had a set of adjustables in 15 years. But with the SPEC-b Bilsteins being a bit overmatched with JDM pinks it's not too much fun at the limit. :)

I do have to thank you for the whiteline LCA install though. I haven't been able to push the car to the limits for a long time with the tennis balls in there.

IMO coilovers are a waste of money on any car. Most of the shock dynos for them that I have seen show they perform very poorly and inconsistently.

I too am a fan of the KISS method of car modding. Carefully selected mods will make your car more enjoyable, more reliable and not drain your wallet by throwing parts at it.

And I'm probably a far worse driver than you. I'm old and my reflexes are starting to suck but it's still fun and that's what matters in the end. ;)
