Not sure if anyone caught it yet, but Subaru is very openly showing off the 2012 Impreza at their home page, to be unveiled at the NY Auto Show...

Not too many details yet, but from what they're giving so far, there'll be a CVT, a new 2.0L engine (the combination of which will yield 36MPG), and still will be available in 4 and 5 doors.

It looks a lot like a shrunken 5th gen Legacy with different headlights to me....

If they do hit 36 mpg hwy, that'll put it just 2 mpg shy of the new Focus, and on par with the Cruze.

      displ.	hp/torque	trans city/hwy mpg
Impreza 2012: 2.0L	146/145 CVT ?/36
Civic 2012: 1.8L	140/? 5 spd auto ?/39
Focus 2012: 2.0L	160/146 6 spd dual-cluth auto	28/38
Elantra 2011: 1.8L	148/131 6 spd auto 29/40
Cruze 2011: 1.4L T	138/148 6 spd auto 24/36

And visual comparison:

Under the hood, an all-new SUBARU BOXER® engine will make it the most fuel-efficient All-Wheel Drive car in America.*
The Legacy held this honor for MY2010, and 2nd place in MY2011 (beaten only by the Countryman All4 manual).

Edmunds Inside Line:

The company also said the new Impreza will have "a roomier interior and improved levels of comfort and refinement."

The fourth-generation Impreza, which goes on sale later this year in the U.S. as a 2012 model, is expected to feature Subaru's new-generation four-cylinder boxer engine, which will be offered in displacements of 2.0 and 2.5 liters. Subaru said output on the 2.0 engine remains the same, at 146 horsepower, while torque climbs from 141 to 145 pound-feet].

For comparison purposes, here's the concept.

Sorry, but I'm wholly underwhelmed. The concept is sex and the production is yawn

Definitely a shrunken 5th Gen. I liked the profile of the concept much better.

Ok, it doesn't look as cool as the concept, but who seriously thought it would? When was the last time a final production vehicle looked as good as the original concept? Heck, even the Pontiac Aztec looked fairly cool in concept mode and look how that turned out.

At first glance it looks like a Corolla, sure, but the more I look at it, the more I think Suzuki Kizashi.

But the wheels on this are too small. Maybe it would look better with 17's like the Outback Sport has now.

Subaru always does this, and I think they are almost worse than any other company. Their concept cars actually look Production ready (minus wheels), and the production cars lose 60% of the coolness factor of the concept. It's a shame, really.

I think we should give the designers a bit of a break here.

This is an entry level car in the market. We're talking about a car that starts at under 17.5 USD. So, a lot of the "extras" (air dams, rims, exhaust housing) obviously can't make it to production for financial reasons. The other point is that this is not a car that is being marketed to enthusiasts. The people buying this thing are granny's and people who want a utility car.

Now Subaru is in a weird position in that their most expensive sports car is also based on the same model as their entry level utility car. It's like if Chevy had to base the Camaro on the Aveo.

So because it's an entry level car, it's gotta look like crap?

Cadillac bases their high performance model on their grandma-mobile and did a good job of making both look good.

Looks as exciting as a Corolla. A mini Legacy with Scion headlights. Yay...

Again, Subaru upping the bland factor to sell more units.

I'll go on record today: It will be the most successful Impreza style ever.

The 2005 LGT wagon was something special though... it was more striking than the sedan which I agree was plain.

They got the rump of the 05 LGT wagon perfect, not to be duplicated again.

I'll agree to the wagon. The problem is no one knew about these cars which is a large reason they didn't sell.

Suddenly they start advertising well and they're amazed that they're able to sell more cars. I often wonder if the LGT wagon might still be around if they actually advertised the Legacy line back in 2005.

Hell, I didn't even think about a Legacy until my friend kept pointing it out, and even then the older Legacies kept popping into my mind. I kept bitching that I couldn't find an automatic WRX
