Strut & Spring package

Recommended Posts

Just rolled over 200,000 miles on my '99 Outback wagon. I'd like to replace the springs and struts at the same time I install new brakes and SS brake lines.

Does anyone sell an already assembled strut/spring combo for this car? Did some searching on line without success. Definitely do not want to lower the car. Currently running 225/60-16's and they just barely clear. In a perfect world I could find a full set of KYB struts with progressive springs installed.

And another question, are there any other wear parts I should replace while I have the struts/springs/brakes off the car?

Thanks guys!

I recently did all four springs and struts on my car. I decided to go ahead and replace everything related to that assembly, so that also included new strut mounts front and rear, since the rubber in those gets old, as well as the rubber seats between the spring and the strut base, and even new bump stops and bellows and even the strut bolts. I'm kind of OCD, lol.

Well, I mean, he was asking about strut-spring combos. I dunno anything about that. Beyond that, all these parts are easily found on http://www.RockAuto.com.

- The struts are KYB-GR2, since they are about 10% stiffer than stock.

- The springs I got OEM from http://www.subarupartsforyou.com.

- The mounts are MOOG parts because they are known to make good quality components.

Any other questions, just let me know!

This is based on my order confirmation emails. I did a lot of copy-pasting to get this somewhat formatted, so if there are errors that you find, let me know. I believe when all was said and done, I ended up with an extra set of bump stops, so I don't think you actually need to ORDER a set, but I dunno (those are labeled as "helpers" in this list). Obviously prices won't be the same as they were when I ordered them, but I suppose this is a good benchmark. At the very least it provides quite a few part numbers.

From http://www.rockauto.com:

  • KYB - STRUT ASSEMBLY - 335020 - $65.79
  • KYB - STRUT ASSEMBLY - 335021 - $65.79
  • KYB - STRUT ASSEMBLY - 235632 - $77.79
  • KYB - STRUT ASSEMBLY - 235633 - $77.79
  • MOOG - STRUT MOUNT - K9559 - $56.79 (x2)
  • MOOG - STRUT MOUNT - K9798 - $80.99
  • MOOG - STRUT MOUNT - K9799 - $80.99
  • MOOG - STRUT BELLOW - K90460 - $15.00 (x2)
  • MOOG - STRUT BELLOW - K90462 - $15.03 (x2)

TOTAL: $622.78

From http://www.subarupartsforyou.com:

  • FRONT COIL SPRING LEFT OR RIGHT - 20330AC3XX - $65.00 (x2)
  • REAR COIL SPRING LEFT OR RIGHT - 20330AC3XX - $52.00 (x2)
  • HELPER FRONT STRUT LEFT OR RIGHT - 20321AA201 - $21.00 (x2)
  • HELPER REAR STRUT LEFT OR RIGHT - 20371AC011 - $22.00 (x2)
  • RUBBER SEAT LOWER REAR STRUT LEFT OR RIGHT - 20375AA002 - $9.00 (x2)
  • RUBBER SEAT UPPER REAR STRUT LEFT OR RIGHT - 20375AC030 - $14.00 (x2)
  • SEAT UPPER FRONT STRUT LEFT OR RIGHT - 20323AA100 - $21.00 (x2)
  • RUBBER SEAT FRONT STRUT LEFT OR RIGHT - 20325AA001 - $12.00 (x2)
  • UPPER ADJUSTING BOLT FRONT STRUT LEFT OR RIGHT - 20540AA090 - $5.00 (x2)
  • LOWER FLANGE BOLT FRONT STRUT LEFT OR RIGHT - 20540AA100 - $3.00 (x2)
  • SPACER FRONT STRUT LEFT OR RIGHT - 20326AA000 - $3.00 (x2)

TOTAL: $454.00

GRAND TOTAL: $1076.78

One should note this list includes just about everything that you could theoretically replace in the strut assembly, so obviously you don't necessarily need all of these parts.

Speaking of which, if anyone WANTS a set of "helpers" (bump stops) let me know, because I just realized that this is a ridiculous $86 worth of four tiny pieces of deformable plastic that I have sitting here that I'll gladly sell to someone for $15 (dunno if even THAT is a reasonable price, lol.) Or, you know, for free because IDGAS.

Yeah. I used to get decent tax rebates when I was still in college, lol.

Also, OCD ≠ cheap maintenance.

Also, I'm an idiot.

...and also because getting all the parts allowed me to assemble all four struts PRIOR to doing the work on the car. I had NEVER done any suspension work until that point, and this was my ONLY mode of transportation (still is) so it HAD to be done in one day and I didn't want to be stuck figuring out how everything went together while doing the swap. By having ALL the parts, I ended up with four fully-assembled strut towers that I could just throw into the car, so the actual swap didn't take very long. Most of the time was spent days prior cursing at the spring compressors.
