SpecBamf41
I have heard that you can buy conversion ebrake shoes to make up for the difference in drum size? I searched with no luck. Where can i buy the new shoes? I already know kartboy makes the adapter bracket... BNR18g on 93oct
Gex
Kns brakes bought the last of the 160-190mm ebrake conversion shoes. They work great on my wagon. https://www.knsbrakes.com/c/home http://www.knsbrakes.com/c/caliper-item/2287_Subaru+V1+Rear+STI+Brembo+Caliper+Upgrade+w%2F+Oversize+Park+Brake+Shoes/31536_Rear+Adapter+shoes+-+For+Legacy
Andy_Mac
The other option is to get the DBA conversion rotors that are brembo size but with the legacy handbrake drum size. That kns site seems to do things right and puts the whole kit together for you Options for conversion rotor or bigger shoes. https://www.knsbrakes.com/c/kns-bracket From what the Internet has taught me, probably all lies, is that the thicker replacement drum shoes have a tendency to crack over time. Not sure if this applies to these kns ones since the pad material doesn't look all that thick, other brands just chuck an extra lump of material on there which doesn't seem to hold out over time all that well. Also be wary of the kartboy adapters. Unless they have another part out I've yet to come across they are designed originally for the subaru branded 2 pot rears, not brembo's so require some grinding to get them to fit correctly with brembo's. There are other alternatives out there that are much better fitting. 2000 Legacy B4 RSK - SOLD 2006 Legacy BP5 GT Spec B wagon - Garage Thread 2011 VW T5 van 2.0L of turbo diesel awesomeness

Andy_Mac
There's a guy on liberty.asn.au who makes them purely for legacy/liberty brembo conversion, user name is cruisn. And judging from everyone who's got them they are a perfect fit. And he reckons the kns ones aren't quite a perfect fit either, so have to consider that too. http://forum.liberty.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=16166 2000 Legacy B4 RSK - SOLD 2006 Legacy BP5 GT Spec B wagon - Garage Thread 2011 VW T5 van 2.0L of turbo diesel awesomeness

Gex
The KNS shoes have been just fine for me. I had never heard of the larger KNS shoes cracking. The shoes do not just add on 20mm of pad they are just like a regular replacement drum shoe.
Andy_Mac
Yea looking at the pics of the kns ones they look fine. Most just use the standard shoe with way more material attached , which is the ones that cause issues 2000 Legacy B4 RSK - SOLD 2006 Legacy BP5 GT Spec B wagon - Garage Thread 2011 VW T5 van 2.0L of turbo diesel awesomeness
SpecBamf41
So what happens when these adapter parts, that are wear items, need to be replaced in the future. I wonder if i should buy 2 sets of shoes... How much is way to much. Cause mine look pretty thick from kns. I'd say like a little over ten mm. If i make a step buy step install thread would that be usefull? Or do we already have one? BNR18g on 93oct
Gex
There is already a brembo master swap thread. Have you ever seen a normal brake drum shoe? Mine looked just like all the other drum shoes I've ever seen.

Andy_Mac
The ones with problems are where they chuck the extra 20-30mm on to step it up to the brembo size drum size 2000 Legacy B4 RSK - SOLD 2006 Legacy BP5 GT Spec B wagon - Garage Thread 2011 VW T5 van 2.0L of turbo diesel awesomeness
SpecBamf41
Well. Kns is one of those people that chunk on extra pad. Damn. The metal foundation is the same size, just extra padding. 200 dollar set of pads and they are not legit. Wtf kns Also. People that say you have to modify them, you dont. You have to grind a bit of the knuckles off so the harware can fit. Not a problem with the braket, just how it has to be. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/03/04/ad0612ded59ea1a43d0fde0c45d8fece.jpg BNR18g on 93oct
Gex
Woah! That is way different then the set I received, they most definitely just tacked on some extra pad to the one you received. I am sorry for the misinformation. The ones I received were branded Onkel and not kns.

fahr_side
I have seen people turn up an insert, 10mm thick, from either cast iron or aluminum to press into the original disk and reduce the diameter to 170mm. If you're just using the parking brake to stop the car rolling away down hills, you can use an aluminum drum and save weight. Aluminum has quite a low coefficient of friction however, so you're not going to initiate any handbrake turns with this. Good idea to drill through the original drum, tap a hole in your insert and use a short bolt to be sure it doesn't rotate. Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs.
